Opened in 2018 as part of an urban improvement program, the Arbat stretches for 500 meters, transformed into a well-maintained oasis with elegant landscaping, comfortable benches, and impressive fountains. Walking here, it's impossible not to notice the 12 glowing angels that seem to hover above visitors' heads, creating a magical atmosphere, especially in the evening hours.

One of the main highlights of this place is the large-scale granite map of Kazakhstan, complemented by small architectural forms. It is not just a decorative element, but a kind of open-air atlas of the country, emphasizing the city's significance on a national scale.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the Arbat is for a leisurely stroll and contemplation. In the evening, grand illumination lights up, and light installations turn the street into a fairytale space. You can watch the play of water in the fountains, examine unusual sculptures, and be sure to take a selfie in the specially equipped photo zone.

For fans of an active lifestyle, high-quality bicycle paths have been laid here. After your walk, you can relax in one of the many cafes or restaurants offering both national cuisine and familiar European fast food. Shoppers will appreciate the presence of boutiques and souvenir shops where you can find something to remember your trip by.

At the end of the street is a theater, and right nearby is a park with the "Golden Eye" Ferris wheel. We recommend combining a walk along the Arbat with a ride on the attraction to see the panorama of the evening city from a bird's-eye view. The atmosphere here is always lively: you can often meet street musicians, giving this place a special creative charm.

Getting There

This popular pedestrian zone is located in the very "heart" of the city at: 4-6 Beybitshilik Avenue (intersection with Beket Batyr Street). Thanks to this location, getting here from any district is easy.

If you are staying in the center, a pleasant walk on foot is the best option. Otherwise, you can use public transport — most city bus routes pass through the central stops. Taxis are also always available and are quite reasonably priced in the city; simply tell the driver "Arbat," and you will be taken to the start of the walking zone.

For those who prefer a private car, parking spaces are provided around the perimeter of the pedestrian zone, but in the evening and on weekends, finding a free spot can be difficult due to the high influx of visitors.

History & Facts

The history of this place as a cultural center began quite recently — the Shymkent Arbat was grandly opened in 2018. The project was part of a large-scale urban modernization program aimed at turning ordinary streets into comfortable spaces for residents and tourists.

Before the reconstruction, this section of Beket Batyr Street was a standard roadway with typical traffic. Inspired by the examples of famous European promenades and the Moscow Arbat, city authorities decided to create a unique atmosphere here, combining modern design with national flair.

Since its opening, the site instantly became a major symbol of the new, dynamically developing city. Its successful location in the historical center allowed the Arbat to fit harmoniously into the existing landscape, becoming a point of attraction for creative youth, street artists, and musicians.

Time Needed

For a leisurely look at the main art objects and a walk from one end of the street to the other, you will need about 1–2 hours. This is quite enough time to examine the granite map, take some vibrant photos, and enjoy the fountains.

If you plan to stop at one of the cozy cafes, browse the souvenir shops, or continue the evening in the nearby amusement park, you should set aside up to 3–4 hours for your visit. We especially recommend coming here shortly before sunset to catch the transition from daylight to the spectacular evening illumination.

Working Hours

As a public urban space, Arbat is open 24/7. You can come here early in the morning for a quiet walk or late at night to admire the city lights.

However, keep in mind that the cafes, shops, and entertainment venues located on the street operate according to their own schedules — most often from 10:00 to 23:00 or until midnight. The most spectacular time to visit is after sunset when the festive illumination is switched on.
