The park is a harmonious blend of an exotic garden and wild forest. Wandering along its paths, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and the shores of Europe, which seem remarkably close on a clear day. The site was once poetically named "Villa Aidonia," emphasizing its status as a secluded sanctuary among singing birds.

For residents and visitors alike, this is more than just a place for a walk; it is a vital ecological and historical site. Parc Rmilat is considered one of the most beautiful urban parks in the country, offering ideal conditions for outdoor relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the central streets.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the park is its botanical diversity. Here, you can see hundreds of plant species, including rare varieties of trees and flowers. Nature lovers will appreciate the well-maintained trails, which are perfect for fitness walking or meditative contemplation of the landscape.

In the heart of the grounds stands Château Perdicaris (Perdicaris Castle). This unique, eclectic villa was recently fully restored. Since 2022, it has housed a cultural heritage center, where visitors can learn about the history of the region and the estate itself through engaging exhibits.

In addition to the architecture, the park features numerous relaxation areas. It is a popular spot for family picnics, yoga, or simply watching the sunset as the lights on the opposite shore of the strait begin to twinkle at dusk.

Getting There

There are several ways to reach this natural getaway from the city center. The most convenient option is to take a taxi. A ride from the medina or central Tangier districts will take about 10–15 minutes. Drivers are well-acquainted with this spot, known locally as "Rmilat" or "Perdicaris."

For those who enjoy walking, the route can be quite challenging as the road leads uphill. However, the path offers scenic views of residential neighborhoods and the coast. If you prefer public transport, you can check local bus routes heading towards Cape Spartel, though stops may be located some distance from the main entrance.

History & Facts

The past of this site is inextricably linked with the name of Ion Hanford Perdicaris, a Greek-American philanthropist who purchased these lands in the 1870s. Back then, the estate was named "Aidonia," which translates to "place of nightingales." Perdicaris built a magnificent villa here in an eclectic style, which remains the park's architectural centerpiece today.

The estate gained worldwide fame in 1904 due to a dramatic event known to history as the "Perdicaris Incident." The owner was kidnapped from his villa by a local rebel, Ahmed al-Raisuni, sparking a major international scandal and even leading to intervention by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.

In 1930, the Perdicaris heirs sold the estate to the influential Pasha Thami El Glaoui, who used it as his summer residence. After the declaration of independence in 1956, the territory became state property. For a long time, the park was neglected until a large-scale restoration began in 2015, returning its former glory and status as an important cultural site.

Time Needed

To enjoy a leisurely stroll through the alleys and take in the views of the strait, you should set aside 2 to 3 hours. This is ample time to admire the villa's exterior, explore the botanical diversity, and take beautiful photos at the viewpoints.

If you plan to visit the cultural heritage center inside the castle or have a small picnic in the shade of the pine trees, we recommend dedicating half a day to the park. A morning walk here is especially pleasant thanks to the fresh sea breeze and the lack of crowds.

Working Hours

The park is open to visitors daily, making it accessible any day of the week. The opening hours are very convenient for both early morning strolls and evening relaxation under the stars.

Opening hours: daily from 07:00 to 23:30. This extended schedule allows you to enjoy the park during the cool morning hours as well as during a spectacular sunset.
