The Chapel of Souls, also known as the Chapel of Souls or Capela das Almas, is one of the most striking and photographed landmarks in Porto, Portugal. This early 18th-century neoclassical church, located on the busy Rua de Santa Catarina in the Santo Ildefonso district, instantly catches the eye with its unusual appearance and is a true gem of the city, attracting many tourists.

The main highlight of the Chapel of Souls is its magnificent exterior facade, almost entirely covered with traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles. Nearly 16,000 (specifically 15,947) deep blue tiles create monumental panels depicting biblical scenes and episodes from the lives of saints, such as Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine. This makes the chapel one of the most impressive examples of azulejo use in Porto and an iconic symbol of Portuguese art.
In addition to the unique facade, the two-story bell tower topped with a dome is also a focal point. Inside the chapel, visitors are greeted by a stunning stained glass window above the entrance door, depicting souls being purified by the blood of Christ, as well as a large chandelier and rich decoration with exquisite architectural details and paintings. While the exterior often overshadows the interior, the internal space also deserves attention for its beauty and special atmosphere of peace.
