Castillo de Luna

About

In the heart of the historic center of Rota stands the majestic Castillo de Luna (Castle of the Moon)—a medieval fortress that has become the main symbol of this corner of the province of Cádiz. This rectangular fortification, with its five powerful towers, proudly overlooks the coast, serving as an integral part of the history preserved in sunny Spain.

The castle's main architectural jewel is its inner courtyard. It is designed in an elegant Gothic style and decorated with unique Mudéjar ornaments, where Christian traditions intertwine with Arabic artistic heritage. It is no wonder that an image of this castle graces the city's official coat of arms, highlighting its significance to the local identity.

Today, Castillo de Luna is more than just an architectural monument; it is a living space. While it houses the municipal council (Ayuntamiento), the fortress doors remain open to tourists. Visitors can touch the ancient stones that served as a residence for noble families and rulers for centuries and feel the spirit of old Andalusia.

What to Do

The first thing to do when visiting the castle is to step into its central courtyard. Here, you can spend hours admiring the painted baseboards with intricate Mudéjar motifs that create a unique play of light and shadow. The atmosphere of the castle's interior is perfect for photoshoots: the ancient masonry and elegant arches serve as a magnificent backdrop for pictures.

As you stroll through the accessible halls of the first floor, pay attention to the heraldic symbols of the Ponce de León family. These coats of arms, scattered throughout the interior, are a reminder of the former power of the fortress's owners. If you happen to be in Rota during the Christmas holidays, be sure to visit again—the castle is transformed by festive lights and decorations, turning into a scene from a fairy tale.

Since the building is used by the city administration, you can see how historical heritage is integrated into modern life. However, keep safety in mind: access to the upper levels and the roof is often limited, and if you are lucky enough to get there, be careful as railings may be missing in some places.

Getting There

Castillo de Luna is located in the heart of the historic center at Calle Cuna, 2. Finding it is quite easy: the fortress is situated in close proximity to the church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la O, which serves as an excellent landmark for tourists strolling through the narrow streets of the old town.

If you are traveling by car, it is best to leave your vehicle in one of the parking lots in the central part of the city and continue on foot, as many streets in Rota's historical district are quite narrow. The city is well-connected by road to other major centers in Andalusia, making it a convenient stop for a day trip.

For those who prefer public transport, intercity buses are available, arriving at the Rota bus station. From there, you can reach the castle on foot in 10–15 minutes. Within the city, it is also convenient to use taxis, which will take you as close as possible to the pedestrian zone of the historic quarter.

History & Facts

The roots of this majestic structure date back to the 11th century when a Muslim fortified monastery—a ribat, known as Rabita Ruta—stood on this site. Its strategic position on the coast allowed for the control of maritime approaches to the region, making it an important site during the Reconquista era.

The Christian history of the castle began in 1251 when King Ferdinand III of Castile recaptured Rota from the Moors. Later, in 1309, the castle became the center of the estates of the influential Ponce de León noble family. For many centuries, Castillo de Luna served not only as a defensive structure but also as a grand residence for governors and the seat of the city council.

Interestingly, at the beginning of the 20th century, the castle changed its purpose and even served as a private summer residence, and later as a school and a hospital. Only after a large-scale restoration completed in 1999 did the building acquire its current appearance and status as an administrative and cultural center. Today, the modern town hall and museum space, preserving the memory of centuries of history, harmoniously coexist here.

Time Needed

For a standard visit to Castillo de Luna, 30–45 minutes is usually sufficient. This is plenty of time to take a leisurely walk through the first floor, admire the inner courtyard, and study the main architectural elements and coats of arms on the walls.

If you plan to examine the Mudéjar patterns in detail, take many photos, or simply sit in the quiet of the inner courtyard to soak in the medieval atmosphere, you should set aside about one hour for your visit. Since the castle is currently an active administrative building, the tour is relatively quick and compact.
