Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse

If you get hungry, there are many atmospheric restaurants around the lighthouse serving traditional Uruguayan cuisine. You can end your visit with a walk along the waterfront, watching the sun slowly sink into the river, painting the snow-white tower of the lighthouse in shades of pink and gold.

Finding the lighthouse is easy: it is located in the heart of the historic center, and its snow-white tower is visible from almost anywhere in the old town. If you arrive by ferry from Buenos Aires, the walk from the terminal to the landmark will take only 10–15 minutes at a leisurely pace along the scenic waterfront.

For those arriving from Montevideo by bus, the journey from the bus station to the historic quarters is also short and pleasant. There is no public transport within the historic district, nor is it needed — all the iconic sites are within walking distance of each other. You can also use taxi services to quickly reach the borders of the old town from more distant areas.

The lighthouse was built in 1857, using the ruins of the ancient Convent of San Francisco, which had been heavily damaged by fire, as its foundation. The evening hours here are especially charming when the street lamps are lit.

When planning your visit, please note that access to the lighthouse observation deck is only available on certain days. The site is closed to visitors at the beginning of the week, but from the second half of Thursday, it hospitably opens its doors to everyone.
