What to Do

Inside the museum, guests can immerse themselves in a creative atmosphere while viewing the personal belongings and paintings of Eduardo Víctor Haedo. Particular attention should be paid to the collection of sculptures and paintings by other prominent masters, such as Ángel Zanelli and Edmundo Prati, who were frequent guests here. A visit to the artist's studio allows you to literally touch the process of creating masterpieces of the past.

A stroll through the adjacent park offers aesthetic pleasure from contemplating panoramic ocean views and skillfully placed art objects. The place becomes especially magical at sunset. During the height of the tourist season, it often hosts musical concerts, theatrical performances, and creative workshops—ranging from tango lessons to literary readings.

Getting There

Located at the intersection of Artigas Boulevard and Mercedes Street, this attraction is situated in the quiet and prestigious Cantegril district. The journey from the city center by car or taxi takes only a few minutes, as the site sits right on the main road connecting Maldonado and the popular resort.

For those who prefer public transport, regular bus routes pass nearby. Finding the place is easy—it is well known among locals and drivers as one of the region's key cultural landmarks.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1944 when the future president Eduardo Víctor Haedo purchased a dilapidated old general store in what was then a deserted area. Interestingly, he funded the massive reconstruction and the transformation of the ruins into a cultural oasis thanks to a lucky lottery ticket (number 8007) won in 1947. Since then, the estate has become a magnet for the intellectual elite of the time.

Here, heated discussions took place between great minds: guests of Haedo included the poet Pablo Neruda and the writer Juana de Ibarbourou. However, the most legendary event is considered to be the president's meeting with Ernesto "Che" Guevara in August 1961. Despite deep ideological differences, the politicians held several long conversations discussing the future of Latin America, making this house a symbol of international dialogue.

The life of the founder ended just as symbolically: Eduardo Víctor Haedo passed away in 1970 right on a garden bench during an interview with a journalist. Today, the legacy of the "temple of tolerance" is protected by the Banco República Foundation, continuing to introduce the world to the rich history of Uruguay.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the hidden corners of the museum and enjoy the peace of the park, most travelers need about 2–3 hours. This is plenty of time to carefully examine the exhibits in the halls, peek into the workshop, and take memorable photos by the sculptures.

If your visit coincides with one of the cultural events or concerts, you should plan for half a day. The estate's peaceful atmosphere invites you to linger longer, admiring the seascapes and taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the popular resort.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes guests from Tuesday to Saturday, opening its doors at 2:00 PM and staying open until 10:00 PM. Please note that Monday and Sunday are days off when access to the grounds is closed.

Since the schedule may change depending on the season or private exhibitions, we strongly recommend checking the official website or contacting the administration before your trip.
