What to Do

In the halls of the Schlossmuseum, everyone will find something to their liking: from stark medieval weapons to elegant furniture and paintings. On the first floor, be sure to dedicate time to art from the Middle Ages to the Rococo period, featuring unique items of church life and artisan crafts. The second floor immerses you in the world of folk traditions and the daily life of the region's residents in the 19th century.

Families with children will especially enjoy the sections dedicated to nature and technology. Here, you can see taxidermy collections and learn about how Austria's economy developed. Of particular interest are the archaeological finds: ancient Celtic jewelry and Roman artifacts offer a glimpse into the origins of civilization on the banks of the Danube.

Don't forget to step out onto the castle's open grounds and terrace. From the heights of Schlossberg hill, you'll find one of the best panoramic views of Linz and the bends of the river. Exploring the external fortifications, ancient bastions, and Rudolf's Gate is a great addition to the indoor exhibitions and provides wonderful photo opportunities.

Getting There

Located at Schlossberg 1, the museum sits on a hill in the heart of the city, near the Nibelungen Bridge and the main square, Hauptplatz. Thanks to its central location, it is easy to reach both on foot and by transport.

If you are using public transport, it is most convenient to look for tram lines 1, 2, and 3 near the Hauptplatz or Landhaus. From the main station, Linz Hauptbahnhof, the tram ride takes only a few minutes, while a walk takes about 20 minutes.

For those who prefer a taxi or private car, please note that direct access to the castle may be limited. It is recommended to leave your car in one of the underground parking lots in the city center (for example, under the main square) and walk the final 5–10 minutes uphill, enjoying the opening views of the Danube.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to ancient times: the first mentions of a fortress on Schlossberg hill date back to 799. In antiquity, the Roman fort of Lentia was located here, and even earlier, the Celtic settlement of Lentos, highlighting the strategic importance of this point overlooking the Danube.

The castle reached its peak in the 15th century when Emperor Friedrich III made it his residence. For eight years, the empire was effectively ruled from here. The massive Friedrich's Gate (15th century) survives to this day as a silent witness to that great era.

In the early 17th century, under Emperor Rudolf II, the castle was rebuilt by Dutch architect Anton Muys in the Mannerist style. Later, the building survived a devastating fire in 1800 and served as a hospital and even barracks before a major restoration began in the mid-20th century. Since 1963, it has officially housed the main museum of Upper Austria.

The castle's modern appearance is complemented by an innovative glass wing, built on the site of the section destroyed by fire. It strikingly connects medieval masonry with 21st-century architecture, making the museum a symbol of continuity between generations.

Time Needed

Given the vast exhibition area of approximately 10,000 square meters, you should allow at least 1.5–2 hours for a quick tour of the main halls. This time is enough to see the key historical artifacts and appreciate the architecture of the castle itself.

For those accustomed to studying painting collections, antique weapons, or the natural history exhibits of Upper Austria in detail, it is better to plan for half a day (3–4 hours). This will allow you to stroll through all the castle's wings without rushing, visit the modern annex, and spend time on the panoramic terrace overlooking the river.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes visitors throughout the week, except for Mondays, when it is closed. Please note the standard opening hours:

It is recommended to arrive an hour or two before closing to have enough time to see the main exhibits. Opening hours may change on public holidays, so it's worth checking the latest information on the museum's official website before your visit.
