Here, more than 800 animals have found their home, representing both familiar European species and exotic inhabitants from far-off lands. Founded in 1964, the zoo specializes in keeping animals in conditions as close as possible to their natural environment. Visitors can look forward to meeting playful meerkats, majestic kangaroos, and numerous birds.

One of the unique features of this place is the mini-museum of natural history, showcasing interesting interactive exhibits such as the skulls and paws of various animals. Its compact size and well-thought-out routes make it an ideal destination for a family outing, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of nature and learn much that is new about the animal kingdom without the hustle and bustle.

What to Do

Many pleasant discoveries await guests at this zoo. Be sure to stop by the petting zoo, where you can feed and stroke friendly goats, sheep, and donkeys—a delight for children and adults alike. For those who love the exotic, a visit to the Tropical House is a must, where colorful birds and small mammals live among dense greenery.

Special attention should be paid to the local terrarium and entomological section, where you can see rare insects and reptiles. If you get hungry, a walk along the forest trails will lead you to cozy rest areas, and the zoo's viewpoints offer spectacular photos of the city from a bird's-eye view.

Many tourists prefer to combine their zoo visit with a ride on the "dragon train" up Pöstlingberg hill. This turns a standard excursion into a true fairy-tale adventure. During the summer, it’s especially pleasant to watch the young animals playing in the outdoor enclosures, such as small wild boars or active meerkats.

Getting There

Reaching this scenic spot on Pöstlingberg hill can be done in a very unusual and memorable way. The most popular option among tourists is a ride on the famous fairytale dragon train (Pöstlingbergbahn), which departs from the city center. This route is considered one of the steepest railways in Europe and offers magnificent panoramic views on the way to the top.

If you prefer public transport, you can take a bus from central Linz to stops in the Hauptplatz area, then transfer to the mountain tram or use a taxi. For those traveling by private car, parking is provided at the zoo entrance, though keep in mind that the road leads uphill.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the option of walking. There are several forest trails leading to the zoo directly from the city. Such a climb will take more time but allows you to fully enjoy the nature of Upper Austria.

History & Facts

Linz Zoo first opened its doors to visitors in 1964. The initiative to create this space came from the Association for the Opening of Natural History Institutions, which sought to create a place for residents to get to know local fauna.

A significant milestone in the park's development was 1980, when, following a major reconstruction, the motto "European and domestic animals in their original form" was adopted. It was then that the focus shifted to creating environments as close as possible to natural habitats, earning the zoo recognition from experts. In 2003, the team's efforts were recognized with the Austrian Nature Reserve Association Award for their significant contribution to nature conservation.

The modern stage of development began in 2009 with the opening of the Tropical House. This allowed for the expansion of the collection with exotic species and made visiting interesting at any time of year. Today, the park successfully combines historical heritage with modern interactive educational methods.

Time Needed

To stroll leisurely along all the paths, visit the terrarium, and explore the exhibits of the mini-museum, most visitors need about 2–3 hours. The park's compactness allows you to see all the inhabitants without long, tiring walks.

For families traveling with children, we recommend setting aside about 4 hours. This is enough time for kids to interact with animals in the petting zoo, play on the playgrounds, and perhaps have a snack with a panoramic view of the city.

Working Hours

Linz Zoo is open to guests daily, making it easy to plan a visit any day of the week. The opening hours are as follows:

From Monday to Sunday, the zoo is open from 09:00 to 18:00. Please note that in the winter period (November to March), closing time is usually earlier, at 16:00, so we recommend arriving in the first half of the day to see all the exhibits in daylight.
