General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Guangyuan is characterized as subtropical, with four clearly defined seasons. This region is typical for its hot and humid summer, which gives way to a cool and relatively dry winter. Such significant fluctuations in temperature and rainfall throughout the year allow travellers to choose the most suitable time for a visit depending on their preferences.

Summer, especially in July and August, is the hottest time of the year with an average temperature of around 25°C and peak values reaching 29°C. This period is also the rainy season, with the highest amount of precipitation and the greatest number of rainy days in the year. Winter, by contrast, is cool, with temperatures dropping to zero degrees, but it is much drier. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather, being pleasant transitional seasons with moderate temperatures, making them the ideal time to explore the city.

Temperature

The climate in Guangyuan features distinct seasons with warm, humid summers and cool winters. The hottest months are July and August, when the average temperature holds at around +25°C, and daytime highs can approach +30°C. The summer period is also notable for high humidity, which makes the heat feel more intense. Winter, conversely, is quite cool. In January and December, the average temperature fluctuates around +3-4°C, and at night, the thermometer often drops to zero or even to slight negatives.

The transitional seasons in Guangyuan offer comfortable weather for travel. Spring brings rapid warming: while in March the average temperature is around +11°C, by May it already reaches a comfortable +19°C. Autumn is also delightful with pleasant weather, transitioning smoothly from a warm September (about +20°C) to a cool November (about +9°C). Daily temperature fluctuations are noticeable throughout the year: the difference between day and night readings is usually 7–9 degrees, which is worth considering when planning evening walks.

Precipitation

The city of Guangyuan observes pronounced seasonality in rainfall distribution, with clearly defined wet and dry seasons. The climate here is characterized by a humid, rainy summer and a significantly drier and cooler winter.

The peak of the rainy season falls on the summer months, especially July. This is the wettest month of the year, with the highest amount of precipitation (averaging 8 mm) and the maximum frequency of rainy days — about 20 days out of 31. The period from June to September is generally characterized by high humidity, with regular rainfall. For instance, significant precipitation also falls in August and September, and the number of rainy days reaches 17.

The winter months, on the other hand, are the driest time of the year. January, February, November, and December are the most arid months, when rainfall is minimal, amounting to just 1 mm. During these months, precipitation occurs rarely, averaging between 6 to 8 days. Given that winter temperatures often drop to zero or below, the scarce precipitation during this period may fall as light snow or drizzle.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Guangyuan, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, as the weather here has pronounced seasonality. The foundation of your luggage at any time of year should be comfortable walking shoes, as you will surely want to explore the local beauties. The key principle for packing your suitcase is layering. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, which can fluctuate noticeably, especially during the transitional seasons.

Summer in Guangyuan, from June to August, is a warm and the wettest period. The average temperature stays at a level of 22-25°C, and the number of rainy days, particularly in July, can reach twenty. Therefore, your suitcase must include light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, a waterproof jacket or raincoat, and a sturdy umbrella. Do not forget sunscreen and a hat for protection against the sun on clear days. In spring (from March to May) and autumn (from September to November), the weather is more changeable. You will need T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, a sweater or fleece, as well as a medium-weight jacket. An umbrella will also come in handy, as precipitation is still likely during these months.

Winter, from December to February, is cold and relatively dry in Guangyuan. The average temperature hovers around 3-6°C, and at night it can drop to zero and below. For a comfortable trip during this period, a warm winter jacket or down coat, sweaters, thermal underwear, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves are necessary. Despite the minimal amount of precipitation, the cold air can be piercing, so warm clothes will become your best companions during winter walks around the city.
