The city of Wanyuan, located in the northeastern part of Sichuan Province in China, is situated in a temperate continental climate zone. Its location at an altitude of approximately 674 meters above sea level shapes its weather: all four seasons are clearly defined here, and the landscape largely determines the gentleness of seasonal transitions.

Winters in this region are cool and often accompanied by frosts, while summers are characterized by high humidity and warmth. Spring and autumn are considered the most favorable periods to visit—during these times, nature transforms, and the mild sun makes walking through the mountain surroundings exceptionally comfortable.

One of the unique climatic features of the city's outskirts, particularly on Mount Batai, is the opportunity to witness a rare combination of seasons where spring blossoms meet the remnants of winter snow. This makes the city's climate highly attractive to landscape photography enthusiasts and eco-tourists.

The temperature regime in Wanyuan demonstrates a significant seasonal range. The coldest month is traditionally January, when the average temperature is around +1.7°C, and nighttime temperatures often dip below freezing (down to -1.5°C). Mid-winter daytime highs rarely exceed +5–7°C, which requires travelers to have warm clothing.

The summer period, by contrast, is characterized by steady warmth. The peak of the heat occurs in July and August, when average daytime temperatures reach +27...28°C. Despite the absence of extreme heat, high humidity can make being outdoors during the day feel quite intense. Summer nights bring long-awaited relief with temperatures around +20°C.

The shoulder seasons are pleasantly moderate: in April and May, the air warms up to a comfortable +17...+21°C, while October greets tourists with mild warmth around +15°C. It is important to note that in the mountainous areas of China in this part of the country, diurnal temperature fluctuations are possible, becoming especially noticeable after sunset.

Precipitation in Wanyuan is distributed very unevenly, forming distinct wet and dry seasons. The bulk of the rain falls between June and October. The wettest period is September, when rainfall reaches an impressive 272.3 mm, as well as July, which accounts for up to 20 rainy days per month.

Summer rains often take the form of intense downpours, typical of the monsoon influence in China. This time of year is characterized by high cloud cover and frequent, though sometimes brief, periods of heavy humidity. Travelers should be prepared for the fact that in July and August, there may be fewer than fifteen dry days in a month.

In contrast, the winter period is considered relatively dry. From December to February, precipitation is minimal (about 35–45 mm per month), and snowfall sometimes occurs instead of rain, turning the mountain slopes into a fairy-tale setting. November also delights tourists with its stability and rare precipitation, making it an excellent time for sightseeing.

When packing your suitcase for Wanyuan, it is important to consider the time of year and your planned activities. For a summer visit (June–August), the foundation of your wardrobe should be lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Given the frequency of rain, be sure to bring a high-quality raincoat or a compact umbrella, as well as comfortable waterproof shoes for hiking.

If your trip is scheduled for the winter months (December–February), prepare for the cold: you will need a warm jacket, scarf, gloves, and ideally, thermal underwear. Since frosts and icy roads are possible during this period, footwear should not only be warm but also have a reliable non-slip sole.

For spring and autumn, the layering principle is the ideal solution. A combination of a t-shirt, a sweater, and a light windbreaker will allow you to feel comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat even in cool weather—the sun in the mountainous regions of China can be quite active.
