What to Do

A visit to Hotel Imperial is, first and foremost, an immersion into a world of relaxation and health. Guests have access to an on-site balneology center where they can enjoy the famous mineral baths, undergo hydrotherapy sessions, or recharge in a modern stainless steel pool. The unique atmosphere of this historical spa is perfect for achieving complete peace of mind.

Architecture and history enthusiasts will enjoy simply strolling through the hotel grounds, taking in the interior details and the panoramic windows overlooking the resort. A "must" on your itinerary is a ride on the unique funicular, which was built through a tunnel specifically for hotel guests back in 1905 to preserve the romantic appearance of the hill.

For active recreation, there are tennis courts and golf facilities, while the day can be rounded off in one of the two fine-dining restaurants, offering both traditional Czech cuisine and international culinary masterpieces. The hotel retains its early 20th-century glamour, providing world-class services amidst picturesque nature.

Getting There

Getting to this architectural masterpiece on the hill is a pleasure in itself. The most romantic and convenient way is to take the funicular, which departs from Theater Square (Divadelní náměstí). The route passes through a tunnel, allowing you to quickly ascend to the hotel entrance while bypassing the steep slopes.

If you are arriving from Prague by car, the drive via the D6/E48 highway takes about two hours. You can also take a train to the main station, Karlovy Vary hlavní nádraží, and then transfer to local public transport or a taxi. From Karlovy Vary Airport, the taxi ride takes no more than 20–30 minutes, making the hotel easily accessible for international travelers.

History & Facts

The history of this "fairy-tale" castle on the hill is linked to the entrepreneur Alfred Schwalb, who decided to address the shortage of elite accommodation in the city in the early 20th century. The legendary "king of hotels," Lord Richard Westbury, acted as the investor, while the design was entrusted to the French engineer Ernest Hébrard. Construction, which lasted from 1910 to 1912, was a true technological breakthrough: the building became the first in the region to be constructed using monolithic reinforced concrete.

Since its grand opening on June 18, 1912, Hotel Imperial has been a magnet for the global elite. Grand dukes, influential politicians, tycoons, and aristocrats from around the world have stayed here. During its heyday, the hotel hosted up to 70,000 guests annually, setting the highest standards of hospitality for the entire resort.

After 1948, the building was nationalized and turned into a state sanatorium. However, a new chapter in its history began in the 1990s. Following a massive reconstruction in 2003, the "Imperial" was fully restored to its historical appearance, including original furniture in Sheraton and Chippendale styles, allowing it to once again take its place among the most prestigious hotels in Europe.

Time Needed

If you plan to visit Hotel Imperial as a sightseer to admire the architecture and dine at the restaurant, 2–4 hours will be sufficient. This is enough time to appreciate the grandeur of Helenin dvor hill, ride the famous funicular, and enjoy the views from the terrace.

For those focused on wellness and spa treatments, an optimal stay would be 1–3 days or more. A full immersion into the tranquil atmosphere and a course of restorative treatments at the balneology center require an unhurried pace of life, which this historical complex perfectly supports.

Working Hours

Hotel Imperial warmly welcomes its guests at any time of day or night. The reception desk and main hotel services operate on a 24/7 basis, ensuring a comfortable check-in and service at your convenience.

The hotel's doors are open daily, including holidays and weekends: Monday — Sunday, open 24 hours. Please note that the operating hours for the balneology center and restaurants may vary, so it is recommended to book treatments and tables in advance.
