What to Do

When you arrive at Becher's Bar, the first thing you should notice is the cocktail list. It features the work of Vítězslav Cirok, one of the world's leading bartenders, who turns drink preparation into a true art form. Be sure to order the famous "Vesper" cocktail — this specific recipe was created here for the filming of the James Bond movie "Casino Royale." Also, don't miss the chance to try a refreshing Beton — the classic combination of Becherovka and tonic.

Besides tasting premium spirits and local wines, the bar often features live music, and on weekends, there are dance parties that last until the early hours. The atmosphere is perfect for both a romantic date and a fun night out with friends. To ensure your evening is perfect, we recommend booking a table in advance, as the venue is very popular, especially during the tourist season.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the legendary Czech liqueur Becherovka, whose recipe was created right here in Karlovy Vary. In 1805, the pharmacist Josef Vitus Becher received the recipe for a medicinal tincture from an English doctor named Christian Frobrig. Initially, the drink was called "English Bitter" and sold as a stomach remedy infused with 20 types of herbs and the famous local mineral water.

Over time, the family business expanded, and the founder's son, Jan Becher, turned the liqueur's production into a flourishing business, building a new factory in 1867. The secret recipe is still kept in the strictest confidence and passed down from generation to generation — today, only two people in the world know the exact composition.

The bar itself at the Grandhotel Pupp has become a kind of temple to this tradition. It embodies the spirit of the 19th century when Becherovka began to gain worldwide fame, being exported first to Vienna and Paris, and then to the USA after the repeal of Prohibition. Every detail of the bar's interior recalls the times when this "medicinal" drink became a symbol of Czech hospitality.

Time Needed

You should set aside between 1 and 3 hours for a visit to Becher's Bar. This is plenty of time to leisurely enjoy signature cocktails, appreciate the classic interior, and immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of an English club.

Many tourists prefer to stop by for a couple of hours at the end of the evening. However, if you catch a live music performance or plan to dance, the time spent with friends can easily fly by until closing time.

Please note that the bar's opening hours are subject to change. Currently, the venue is open to guests from Tuesday to Saturday, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM. The bar is closed on Mondays and Sundays.
