Christmas house

About

Imagine a place where festive lights never dim even in the height of summer, and the scent of pine and cinnamon lingers in the air all year round. The Christmas House (Vánoční dům) is a unique exhibition complex in Karlovy Vary, nestled within the walls of the historic Doubí Castle on the banks of the Ohře River. This isn't just a museum, but a truly interactive space where childhood dreams and centuries-old traditions, carefully preserved by Czechia, come to life.

The exhibition spans the halls of a castle dating back nearly 700 years. Here, 19th-century antique toys and retro decorations from the last century sit alongside modern designer installations. One of the museum's highlights is the country's largest collection of teddy bears, officially listed in the Czech Book of Records. Visitors are greeted by a majestic eight-meter Christmas tree adorned with thousands of lights and a meticulously detailed Magic Village with miniature trains and carousels.

The space is divided into themed zones: from nostalgic rooms featuring decorations from our grandmothers' time to opulent halls in classic Christmas colors—gold, silver, and red. Thanks to its cozy café and designer souvenir shop, the Christmas House has become a favorite spot for family outings, where every guest can step back into their childhood for a while.

What to Do

Everyone will find something to enjoy in this fairytale space. Start your journey with a tour of the teddy bear museum, home to thousands of fuzzy inhabitants—from miniature vintage bears from the early 20th century to giant modern exhibits. Children will love the chance to play surrounded by so many toys, while adults will enjoy spotting familiar characters from their own childhoods.

Be sure to linger at the "Magic Village": a complex installation featuring moving trains, carousels, ice rinks, and tiny glowing houses. You could spend hours admiring the details of this miniature winter wonderland. Afterward, wander through the themed rooms, each decorated in its own style—from understated silver to traditional red and green Christmas decor.

For little visitors, there are creative workshops. Here, you can paint a wooden ornament, create a unique Christmas tree decoration, or craft a souvenir that will serve as a wonderful reminder of your trip. It's a great opportunity to get creative and take a piece of the holiday home with you.

Round off your visit at the cozy café, where the menu and interior change every season. Try fresh pastries and aromatic tea while enjoying the view of the Ohře River from the castle terrace. And don't forget to stop by the shop—you can buy exclusive, handmade Christmas ornaments that are hard to find in regular stores.

Getting There

The Christmas House is located at Studentská 1/4, in a picturesque district within the Doubí Castle building. From the central part of Karlovy Vary, you can reach it on foot in about 20–30 minutes. The walking route follows the Ohře riverbank and passes through cozy park areas, which is a pleasant addition to the trip in itself.

If you prefer public transport, take a bus to the stops in the Doubí area or directly to the river. From the main railway station or the central bus station, it is most convenient to take a taxi—the ride will take no more than 5–10 minutes. For active travelers in the warmer months, a bike ride from the famous Karlovy Vary colonnades is a great option.

For those traveling by car, please note that parking directly at the castle is limited. During the high tourist season, it is recommended to leave your car in the nearest municipal parking lots and walk the short remaining distance while enjoying the architecture of the historic suburb.

History & Facts

The walls that today resonate with Christmas carols have a rich 700-year history. Doubí Castle began as a stern medieval fortress, eventually transforming into an elegant Baroque manor. The building acquired its current Neo-Renaissance appearance in the 19th century, when it served as a residence for the local nobility.

The story of the "Christmas House" project itself began much later, in 1991. It was founded by a Czech family specializing in professional interior decoration. The owner's passion for festive traditions grew into a large-scale project: over decades, she collected unique toys, decorations, and figurines that eventually filled the halls of the old castle.

A particular point of pride for the museum is the teddy bear collection, which is officially recognized as the largest in Czechia and listed in the national Book of Records. Every item here—from antique toys to modern designer pieces—was selected or handcrafted with immense attention to detail.

Despite the castle being rebuilt several times, it retains a unique eclectic atmosphere. The stone arches and ancient halls create a sense of being in both an old church and a fairytale mansion at the same time, where time has stood still for an eternal holiday.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the themed halls, visit the teddy bear museum, and study the miniature Christmas village in detail, most visitors need about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to soak up the atmosphere and take some memorable photos.

If you plan to visit the creative workshops with children or want to enjoy a cup of coffee with festive pastries at the local café, we recommend allowing at least 3 hours. There is no need to rush here, as the Christmas House is designed specifically for guests to slow down and feel the magic of the moment.
