Le Musée des Jouets

About

Imagine a place where time has stood still and the childhood dreams of several generations are gathered under one roof. This is exactly the atmosphere offered by the Toy Museum (Le Musée des Jouets), located in the charming city of Montauban. This private museum, which has become a true "treasure cave," occupies an impressive area of about 800 m² and is one of the most heartwarming attractions that France has to offer in the Occitanie region.

The museum's exhibition spans almost two centuries of history, showcasing thousands of unique exhibits from the 19th and 20th centuries. Here you can see antique dolls, legendary Meccano construction sets, complex electric train models, and even entire battle scenes with tin soldiers. Visitors are particularly delighted by the rich collection of Barbie dolls and highly detailed scale models, including a miniature replica of the Place Nationale.

This is not just an exhibition of objects, but a living space where every exhibit tells its own story. Visitors are greeted by the sounds of an old barrel organ, and many mechanisms are still in working order. In 2024, the museum expanded by opening a special automotive section with three racing tracks, making it even more attractive for family vacations.

What to Do

In this museum, adults get a legitimate chance to feel like children again, while children get to discover a world without gadgets. The main reason to visit is the interactive demonstrations. Passionate volunteers delight in bringing old mechanisms to life: you can see century-old electric trains in action, hear the sounds of rare toys, and watch exciting races on miniature Scalextric and Jouef car tracks.

Be sure to check out the playroom, which features traditional wooden games and building sets. Here, the whole family can compete or try to build something unusual in the Meccano workshop. For fans of theatrical arts, the museum periodically hosts performances featuring the famous Guignol puppet, while history buffs will appreciate the detailed dioramas depicting the Tour de France bicycle race or battles from past eras.

Don't forget to take some time to explore the unique collection of 3D photographs from the 1950s and the new Barbie doll exhibition. Since tours are often conducted in small groups, every guest receives personal attention, and the guides' stories allow you to learn amazing facts about the creation of toys that were once the ultimate dream for millions of people.

Getting There

Finding your way to this magical place is quite simple. The museum is located at 770 Boulevard Blaise Doumerc. If you are already exploring the city center, a pleasant walk from the famous Place Nationale will take only about 15 minutes. For those who prefer comfort, you can always call a taxi, which will take you to the museum's doors in just a few minutes.

For travelers arriving from other regions, Toulouse is a convenient reference point—it is located only 50 km to the south. Trains and buses run regularly between the cities, and the journey takes less than an hour. If you are traveling by your own or a rental car, a nice bonus is the availability of free parking right next to the museum building.

History & Facts

The history of this amazing place began not with official decrees, but with the sincere passion of one person. Engineer Gérard Misraï spent many years passionately collecting Meccano sets and miniature fortresses. His collection grew until it became something more than just a hobby. Thanks to the support of entrepreneur Michèle Gualino, the museum found its home and opened its doors to its first visitors on December 6, 2016.

Over the years, this private institution, supported by volunteers, has become a true source of pride for the region. In 2020, the museum was even featured in a special Christmas report on the TF1 television channel, ranking sixth among the most heartwarming places in France. The collection is constantly growing: for example, in 2021, the Meccano Friends Club donated a unique replica of the Sagrada Familia to the museum, and in 2023, an exceptional collection of Barbie dolls was added.

Today, across an area of 800 m², volunteers do not just store exhibits but keep them in a "living" state. The museum aims not only to entertain but also to provide educational enlightenment, showing how materials, design, and the very concept of childhood have changed over two centuries.

Time Needed

To leisurely browse all the display cases and enjoy the interactive zone, we recommend setting aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. This is quite enough time to listen to the volunteers' stories and watch the trains in motion.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is better to schedule about 2.5 hours. Younger visitors will likely want to stay in the play area longer to try out traditional games or participate in races on the miniature car tracks.

Working Hours

The museum is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday. Guests are welcome in the afternoon—from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This is the perfect time to drop by after lunch and spend a cozy evening surrounded by history.

Please note that the museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Before planning your trip, we strongly recommend checking the official website, as the opening hours may change during holidays.
