Koblenz Cable Car — Lower Station (Talstation) is not just a transport hub, but a grand gateway to one of the most impressive panoramas in Germany. Located on the picturesque Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer embankment in the city of Koblenz, this station serves as the starting point for a breathtaking ascent to the historical Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Technically, this cable car is a unique piece of engineering: it is Germany's first tricable circulating system. Built by the Austrian company Doppelmayr, it is capable of transporting up to 7,600 people per hour. The cabins cover the 890-meter path at a height that opens up views of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley cultural landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The lower station is equipped with everything necessary for comfortable waiting and boarding. 18 panoramic cabins with massive glass windows allow you to observe the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers in great detail. Thanks to the high travel speed (up to 5.5 m/s) and modern design, even a short trip turns into a full-fledged attraction that is immensely popular with tourists from all over the world.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the lower station is, of course, the ascent itself. For a few minutes, you will literally "fly" over the mighty Rhine, watching the movement of barges and riverboats far below. Panoramic views of the old town, basilica spires, and the famous "German Corner" (Deutsches Eck) create ideal conditions for photography and videography. The glass walls of the cabins provide a 360-degree view, ensuring breathtaking shots for every passenger.

After arriving at the top, your adventure continues at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. This is one of the largest preserved fortresses in Europe, where you can not only explore the fortifications but also visit interesting museums, exhibitions, and well-kept gardens. Cultural events and historical reenactments are often held here, complementing the overall experience.

For those who prefer a more relaxed holiday, a stroll along the Rheinanlagen embankment before or after the trip is an excellent option. Here you can enjoy the atmosphere of the river port, sit in one of the cozy cafes, or simply watch the city life. The modern and eco-friendly cable car makes visiting historical sites comfortable and accessible for people of all ages, turning a simple journey from point A to point B into a highlight of your visit.

Getting There

Reaching the lower station of the cable car (Talstation) is very easy, as it is located on the famous Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer embankment, right in the heart of the tourist zone. If you are already walking in the city center, the stroll from the famous "German Corner" (Deutsches Eck) will take you no more than 5–10 minutes. The Basilica of St. Castor, located in the immediate vicinity, also serves as a landmark.

For those who prefer public transport, numerous buses stop in the Old Town (Altstadt) and along the embankment. If you are arriving in the city by train, you can walk from the main station Koblenz Hbf in about 20 minutes or take a city bus that will drop you off as close as possible to the Rheinanlagen park area.

If you are traveling by car, you can leave your vehicle in one of the paid parking lots in the center or near the embankment. Keep in mind that on weekends and holidays, the popularity of this place increases, so it is better to arrive early. For travelers from other regions, it is most convenient to use ICE or EC trains from Frankfurt or Cologne directly to Koblenz.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 2008, when the decision was made to create a modern and eco-friendly transport system for the Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA 2011). The cable car project in Koblenz was chosen as the best alternative to buses, allowing for the minimization of environmental impact. Construction proceeded at a record pace: starting in the spring of 2009, it was completed by the end of the same year, and helicopters were even used to tension the massive cables.

The official opening took place in the summer of 2010, and the site became incredibly popular immediately. During its first month of operation, the "aerial bridge" transported about 50,000 passengers. Interestingly, the cable car was originally planned as a temporary structure to be dismantled in 2013. It was thought that it might disrupt the visual landscape of the Rhine Valley, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

However, residents and tourists loved the attraction so much that a large-scale campaign was launched to preserve it. A petition gathered more than 100,000 signatures, and after long negotiations with international experts, it was decided to keep the lift. Today, it is recognized as one of the most modern tricable systems in Europe and has become an integral part of the urban landscape, symbolizing the harmony between modern technology and historical heritage.

Time Needed

To simply make the round trip and enjoy the panoramic views from the cabin, you will need very little time—about 30–45 minutes including boarding. The "flight" over the Rhine itself lasts only 4–5 minutes each way, but this time is packed with vivid visual impressions.

However, most tourists use the cable car to visit Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. In this case, it is worth setting aside 2 to 4 hours for the walk. This time is enough to leisurely explore the museum exhibitions, stroll along the fortress terraces, and take commemorative photos. If you also plan to walk along the embankment and explore the old town, it is best to allocate half a day for this route.

Working Hours

The cable car operates daily, providing convenient access to the city's main attractions throughout the week. According to the official schedule, the site is open to visitors from 10:00 to 19:00, Monday through Sunday.

Please keep in mind that operating hours may change depending on the season, weather conditions (e.g., strong winds), or special events held at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. It is recommended to check the current schedule on the official website before your trip to ensure your visit goes as smoothly as possible.
