General Weather Overview
Mumbai, located on the west coast of India, is characterized by a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Air temperature remains high throughout the year, with an average annual temperature of about 27-28°C. Even in the "coolest" months, such as January, the average temperature holds at a comfortable level of around 24°C, while in the pre-monsoon period, especially in May, it can rise above 30°C.
The year in Mumbai can be divided into two main seasons. The dry season usually lasts from November to May. During this period, especially from January to April, precipitation is practically non-existent, and days are predominantly sunny and hot. This time is considered the most comfortable for visiting the city. With the arrival of June begins the monsoon season, which continues approximately until September-October. These months are characterized by heavy rainfall, high humidity, and frequent showers. The greatest amount of precipitation falls in July and August, when the number of rainy days reaches its maximum.
Therefore, when planning a trip to Mumbai, it is worth considering these seasonal fluctuations. If you prefer dry and sunny weather, it is better to choose the months from November to April. For those who are not afraid of tropical downpours and want to see the city during the period of nature in full force, the monsoon season is suitable, although one should be prepared for possible transport difficulties due to heavy rains.
Temperature
The temperature regime in Mumbai remains warm throughout the year, though seasonal fluctuations are noticeable. The average annual temperature ranges from approximately 23.9°C in January to 30.0°C in May. The hottest month is typically May, when the average daytime temperature reaches 30.0°C, and maximum values can rise to 32.6°C. April is also very hot, with maximum temperatures up to 33.0°C. The coolest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 23.9°C and minimum night temperatures dropping to 19.5°C, creating a pleasant freshness.
The summer period in Mumbai, especially from May to August, is characterized by high temperatures and humidity. May is the peak of the heat before the onset of the monsoons, with average temperatures around 30.0°C. With the arrival of the monsoons in June, July, and August, the temperature drops slightly (average values of 28.5°C, 27.0°C, and 26.8°C respectively), but high humidity makes the weather noticeably sultry and stifling. In these months, the difference between daytime (maximums from 28.1°C to 30.3°C) and nighttime (minimums from 25.5°C to 26.8°C) temperatures becomes minimal, especially in July and August (about 2-3°C), which is associated with constant cloud cover and precipitation.
The winter months, from December to February, offer the most comfortable weather for visiting Mumbai. In December, the average temperature is about 25.4°C, in January it drops to 23.9°C, and in February it begins to gradually rise to 25.3°C. Nights during this period can be quite cool, with minimum temperatures from 19.5°C (in January) to 21.1°C (in December), while days remain warm and sunny, with maximum values from 28.4°C to 30.2°C. It is in the dry winter season that the most significant diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed, reaching 8-10°C, providing pleasant coolness after sunset.
Precipitation
In Mumbai, there is a clearly defined seasonality of precipitation, dividing the year into a prolonged dry period and an intense monsoon season. The dry season covers the months from November to April. Specifically, from January to April, no precipitation falls at all (0 mm), and the number of rainy days is zero. This makes this period absolutely dry and predictable in terms of the absence of rain.
The monsoon season, bringing the bulk of the annual precipitation, lasts from June to September. The peak of the rains falls in July, which is the wettest month: an average of 22 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains practically every day (31 rainy days). August is also very rainy, with 15 mm of precipitation and 31 rainy days. In June (11 mm, 26 rainy days) and September (14 mm, 28 rainy days), significant amounts of precipitation and a high frequency of rains characteristic of the monsoon climate are also observed.
Transitional periods between the dry season and the monsoons are also noticeable. In May, humidity begins to increase, about 1 mm of precipitation falls, and there are approximately 2 rainy days. October marks the end of the monsoon, with a decrease in precipitation to 3 mm and a reduction in the number of rainy days to 13. November and December become very dry again, with zero precipitation, although in November there may be 1 rainy day, and in December — 2, indicating an extremely low probability of rain.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Mumbai, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, considering its tropical climate and pronounced seasonality. Year-round, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen to comfortably tolerate the heat. Be sure to take comfortable footwear for long walks, high SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the intense sun. In the dry season, which lasts roughly from November to May (especially from January to April, when there is practically no rainfall), focus mainly on summer clothing: shorts, t-shirts, light dresses, and sundresses. In the "coolest" months of this period, such as January and February, when the minimum temperature can drop to 19-20°C, a light sweater, cardigan, or shawl may come in handy for the evening hours.
If your journey is planned for the monsoon season, which usually lasts from June to September, be prepared for frequent and sometimes heavy rains, as well as high humidity. During this period, indispensable companions will be a good umbrella and a light raincoat or waterproof jacket. Give preference to clothes that dry quickly and shoes that are not afraid of moisture – for example, sturdy sandals or water-resistant sneakers. Despite the rain, the temperature remains high, so breathable fabrics are still important. Regardless of the season, for visiting temples and other religious sites, it is recommended to have clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. The principle of layering in clothing for Mumbai is less relevant due to consistently high temperatures, however, a light cover-up can be useful in heavily air-conditioned spaces or during cooler evenings in the dry season.
