About

Located in the picturesque city of Bolzano, the Colle Cable Car (Funivia del Colle) is a unique blend of a historical monument and a breathtaking attraction. In Italy, this site is particularly popular as it is recognized as one of the oldest operating passenger cable cars in the world.

The main purpose of this line is to connect the city center with the secluded mountain area of Colle. What to Do

The main adventure begins right in the lift cabin: as you rapidly gain altitude, a stunning panorama of the Adige Valley and the snow-capped Alpine peaks unfolds before you. This is the perfect moment to take out your camera and capture Bolzano in all its glory.

Once you arrive at the top station on the Colle plateau, you will enter a world of tranquility and pure mountain air. Here, visitors will find various hiking trails running through thick coniferous forests and specially equipped paths for mountain biking enthusiasts. This place is ideal for those who want to escape the city noise and spend time alone with nature.

After your walk, you can relax in one of the cozy mountain restaurants serving traditional Tyrolean cuisine. For families with children, there are outdoor areas on the plateau for relaxation and picnics, making a trip on the cable car an excellent option for a full day out.

Getting There

The valley station, where the Colle Cable Car departs from, is located at Via Campegno, 4. It is quite easy to reach from the city center on foot or by public transport. City buses run regularly from the main train station, and a taxi ride will take only a few minutes.

For those who prefer to travel by their own or a rented car, parking is available near the valley station. Please note that the mountain station is located directly in a mountain area, so the main ways to get there are by cable car or via hiking trails for experienced travelers.

History & Facts

The history of this unique piece of engineering began in 1908. It was initiated by local entrepreneur Josef Staffler, who decided to connect his mountaintop hotel with the city. Thanks to his bold idea, the cable car in Bolzano became the first in the world designed specifically for passenger transport.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this event was a true technical sensation, demonstrating the capabilities of modern engineering. Since then, the structure has been modernized several times to meet strict safety standards, yet it has carefully preserved its historical spirit and status as a monument of industrial architecture.

Today, the Colle Cable Car is considered not just a mode of transport, but an important cultural heritage site of the South Tyrol region. It serves as a living reminder of the times when Alpine tourism was just beginning its rapid development, turning inaccessible mountain peaks into favorite vacation spots.

Time Needed

To fully experience this location and walk around the Colle plateau, we recommend allowing 2 to 4 hours. This is plenty of time to leisurely enjoy the views during the ascent, take memorable photos at the observation decks, and take a short walk along the forest trails.

If you plan to have lunch at one of the mountain restaurants or set off on a longer hike in the surrounding area, it is worth dedicating a full day to the visit. The fresh mountain air and tranquility invite a long and peaceful rest away from the city bustle.

Working Hours

The cable car schedule is very convenient for both tourists and locals. From Monday to Saturday, the lift operates from 6:50 to 11:00 and from 12:00 to 19:30. On Sundays, operations start a bit later—from 8:00 to 11:00—and resume after the lunch break from 12:00 to 19:30.

Please note the midday break (from 11:00 to 12:00), during which the cabins do not run. It is recommended to plan your visit so that you do not arrive at the station during this time interval.
