Lake Kinrin is one of the most picturesque and peaceful natural attractions in Japan, located in the charming resort town of Yufuin, near the famous city of Beppu. This small lake, surrounded by lush greenery and mountains, is famous for its unique feature: both hot thermal springs and cold spring water bubble up from the bottom of the lake. This mixture of waters creates a truly magical sight.
The main highlight of Lake Kinrin is the mystical mist that rises above its surface on cool mornings, especially from autumn to winter. When warm water from underground springs meets the cold air, a thick white haze forms, enveloping the lake and creating a fairytale, ethereal atmosphere. It is no wonder that its name translates as "Golden Scale Lake": according to legend, a scholar saw the scales of a fish glistening like gold in the water under the rays of the setting sun.
