Myoryuji, widely known as the Ninja Temple (Ninja-dera), is a unique Buddhist temple located in Kanazawa, Japan. Despite its intriguing name, the temple was not historically a hideout for actual ninjas. It earned its nickname due to its incredibly complex and clever architecture, filled with secret passages and defensive features.

Built in the 17th century, Myoryuji appears to be a modest two-story building from the outside. However, its internal structure is deceptive: the temple is actually a complex four-story labyrinth. This feature was no accident—Myoryuji was part of a defensive complex created to protect the nearby Kanazawa Castle.
The temple belongs to the Nichiren Buddhist sect, known for its interest in mystical rites. Although ninjas themselves never lived in Myoryuji, it is believed they were involved in its design and construction. Because of this, the temple's layout resembles the legendary "secret houses" of the ninja, making a visit a truly fascinating experience for anyone interested in Japanese history and culture.
