At one time, Kofu Castle was considered one of the most powerful and significant fortifications in the Kanto region, second in importance only to the famous Edo Castle. Its walls, reaching an impressive height of 17 meters, were built using the most advanced technologies of the time. The castle's defense was meticulously planned, featuring a complex system of gates and towers that made it practically impregnable.
From its former glory, impressive stone walls remain today, one of which is considered the largest in all of eastern Japan. You can also see the massive foundation intended for the donjon—the castle's main tower. Interestingly, despite the existence of the foundation, there is no precise historical evidence that the donjon itself was ever completed. A walk through the ruins allows you to touch history and imagine the scale of this grand structure.
A visit to the Kofu Castle Ruins offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of medieval Japan, appreciate the craftsmanship of ancient builders, and enjoy the picturesque views from the castle grounds. This site will appeal to both history buffs and lovers of beautiful landscapes.
