General Weather Character

The city of Kerteh welcomes travellers with a classic equatorial climate, characterised by heat and high humidity throughout the year. There are no sharp temperature fluctuations or distinct seasonal changes familiar to residents of temperate latitudes. The weather remains consistently hot, allowing you to plan a trip in almost any month if you enjoy the tropical sun.

The temperature background in this region of Malaysia is surprisingly constant: average figures fluctuate in a comfortable range from +25°C to +28°C. During the day, the air usually warms up to +30°C, whilst nights bring only slight coolness, rarely dropping below +23°C. Thanks to this stability, tourists will not need to bring warm clothing, although it is worth ensuring you have attire made from natural fabrics.

An important feature of the local climate is regular precipitation. Rain here is a frequent phenomenon, and the number of rainy days per month remains high year-round, varying from 20 to 30 days. The wettest period usually falls during the autumn months and the beginning of winter. Nevertheless, tropical downpours are often brief and are quickly replaced by clear skies, bringing pleasant freshness.

Temperature

The climate in this region is distinguished by enviable stability, so Kerteh welcomes travellers with warmth at any time of the year. There are no sharp seasonal drops characteristic of temperate latitudes. The warmest period is traditionally considered to be May, when the average temperature reaches 27.9°C, and daytime highs exceed the 30°C mark. The summer months also remain hot and stable, maintaining average figures around 27°C.

Even in the nominal "winter" months, such as December and January, the weather remains comfortably summer-like and mild. This time of year can be called the coolest, although the term is quite relative: the average air temperature is about 25.5°C. For tourists, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy warmth without exhausting heat, as the sun warms more delicately during this period.

Moderate temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the day, bringing pleasant freshness after sunset. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum is usually about 4–6 degrees. If during the day the air warms up to 28–30°C, by night the temperature drops to a comfortable 23–24°C. Such conditions are ideal for evening strolls, and you are unlikely to need warm clothes for your trip.

Precipitation

Since Kerteh is located in a humid tropical climate zone, precipitation here is a faithful companion for travellers throughout the year. There is no clearly defined dry season in the usual sense: rains fall regularly, refreshing the air and supporting the region's lush vegetation. There is no snow in this part of the world, so one should expect exclusively warm downpours.

The rainiest period falls at the end of the year, especially in October and November, when the number of days with precipitation reaches a maximum (up to 30 days per month). At this time, as well as in December and January, rains can be prolonged and heavy. If you are planning a trip for these months, be sure to take care of waterproof clothing and reliable footwear.

February and March can be considered a relatively calm time. During this period, the intensity of precipitation decreases to a minimum (about 4–7 mm), and the number of rainy days reduces to 20–21. Most often, rains at this time are short-lived: they pass quickly, giving way to bright sunshine, which makes these months more comfortable for walks and excursions.

What to Pack

When preparing for a trip to Kerteh, you should orient yourself towards the hot and humid tropical climate that prevails here year-round. The average air temperature consistently holds in the range of +25...+28°C, so the foundation of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Loose t-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses will ensure comfort, whilst a light long-sleeved cardigan will be useful for protection against air conditioning in indoor spaces or shopping malls.

Pay special attention to protection against moisture: statistics show that it rains here very frequently, with the number of rainy days in a month reaching 25–30, especially in October and November. Be sure to bring a compact raincoat or a sturdy folding umbrella. Footwear should be comfortable for long walks and, preferably, waterproof or quick-drying, for example, sandals with reliable soles or light trainers.

Despite frequent cloudiness, the sun in Malaysia is very active, so your luggage must contain sunscreen with high SPF, a head covering, and quality sunglasses. It is also worth bringing insect repellents, as insects become active in humid weather, and swimwear if you plan to visit the beaches.
