General Weather Character

The climate in Røst can be described as temperate maritime, with surprisingly mild winters for these northern latitudes and cool summers. Thanks to its geographical location and the strong influence of warm currents, there is a very small temperature amplitude throughout the year: the thermometer rarely drops below zero even in January, but it also does not rise too high at the height of the summer season.

Summer here is fresh, with average temperatures around +11…+12°C, and is the most comfortable period to visit, especially July, when the number of rainy days drops to a minimum. Autumn and winter, on the contrary, are distinguished by high humidity: in November and December, precipitation can occur for more than 20 days a month. When travelling here, it is worth being prepared for the cloudy weather typical of coastal areas for which Norway is famous, and definitely bring high-quality waterproof clothing.

Temperature

Climatic conditions in this region are surprisingly mild for such northern latitudes, which is explained by the strong influence of the ocean and warm currents. Røst practically does not experience harsh winters: even in January and February, the average temperature holds at the level of +2.5...+2.8°C. Interestingly, statistically the coldest month is March with an average indicator of about +1.7°C. Frosts here are a rare phenomenon, and winter feels more like a prolonged, cool, and damp autumn.

The summer season does not bring intense heat, offering tourists fresh and invigorating weather. The warmest month is usually August, when the air warms up on average to +12.6°C, and daily maximums reach +13.3°C. July is also quite comfortable with a temperature of about +11.7°C. The period from June to September is characterized by the absence of sultriness, which makes it ideal for active recreation, although warm clothes will be needed even in summer.

A characteristic feature of the local weather is the incredible stability of the temperature regime during the day. The difference between day and night indicators is minimal and rarely exceeds 1–1.5 degrees in any season. For example, in April the average minimum is +3.5°C, and the maximum is only +4.9°C. The ocean works like a giant thermoregulator, smoothing out any sharp jumps, so there are no situations here when a sharply cold night follows a warm day.

Precipitation

The climate in Røst is typical for the island part of the country: it is often damp and windy here, which is due to the proximity of the open ocean. Precipitation falls regularly throughout the year, however, its intensity is usually low. In winter, instead of heavy snowfalls, wet snow or rain often falls here, and in summer short-term drizzling rains prevail.

The greatest number of cloudy days falls on the autumn-winter period. The "wettest" month in terms of precipitation frequency is November, when rain or snow can fall for up to 23 days. October, December, January, and March are also distinguished by high humidity: about 20 days with precipitation are recorded in these months, so waterproof clothing will be a mandatory attribute in your suitcase.

If you are looking for drier weather, it is better to plan a trip for the summer. July is considered the most favourable month: the number of rainy days is reduced to a minimum (on average about 9). Spring, especially April and May, also gives travellers a respite from frequent rains (about 13 days with precipitation), allowing you to enjoy the rugged beauty of Norwegian nature.

What to Pack

When planning a journey to Røst, it is worth remembering that the weather here is changeable and windy all year round. The main principle of wardrobe selection is layering. As a top layer, be sure to take a high-quality windproof and waterproof jacket with a hood, preferably a membrane one. A regular umbrella on the islands is often useless due to strong gusts of wind from the ocean, so a reliable raincoat will be a much more practical solution.

The air temperature even in the warmest months (July and August) rarely exceeds +13°C, so warm things are necessary regardless of the season. For winter and autumn, when the number of rainy days can reach 20–23 per month, be sure to stock up on a set of thermal underwear and woollen sweaters. In summer, a thick fleece jacket, a light hat, and gloves will also be useful, especially if you plan sea trips or bird watching on the coast.

Pay special attention to footwear: it should be comfortable, waterproof, and with a non-slip sole, as humidity here is high all year round. Trekking boots are best suited for walking on rough terrain. Despite the cool climate, bring sunglasses, as well as a waterproof cover for your backpack to protect equipment and documents from sudden precipitation.
