The former São Teotónio hospital building is striking in its scale: it is a square structure with a massive internal cloister of 500 square meters, framed by 26 massive stone arches. Above the main entrance, three majestic statues representing Faith, Hope, and Charity "watch over" visitors, serving as a reminder of the building's original charitable purpose.

The interior, restored based on the project by architect Gonçalo Byrne, has preserved authentic elements: semicircular staircases, antique tiles, and wood paneling. Today, it houses not only a luxury hotel but also a magnificent restaurant and a modern spa, making Pousada Viseu a true cultural and gastronomic landmark of the region.

What to Do

A visit to Pousada Viseu is, above all, a gastronomic journey. At the local restaurant, you should try traditional dishes from the Beira Alta region, such as tender Lafões-style roasted veal or the exquisite queijo da serra sheep's cheese pudding. In the hotel bar, be sure to notice the wines from the Dão region: here they not only offer the best varieties but also conduct professional tastings.

The interiors deserve special attention. In the bar, you'll find a fascinating object—a five-meter wooden model of the cathedral covered in gold foil, created back in 1947. While walking through the corridors, take a look into the smoking room, which still features original furniture from the pharmacy laboratory of the old hospital, creating an unmistakable atmosphere of the past.

For total relaxation, guests have access to a spa center with an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, and outdoors, you can stroll through a genuine urban vineyard where 11 varieties of grapes are grown. Thanks to the hotel's location, it is convenient to take walking tours to the Viseu Cathedral and the historic Baroque buildings for which this city is so famous.

Getting There

Finding Pousada Viseu is easy, as it is located right in the city center. If you are traveling by public transport, the hotel is conveniently accessible on foot: the main bus terminal, Interface Terminal de Transportes, is just a 5-minute walk away.

For those who prefer to travel by car, the city of Viseu is well-connected to the rest of the country via the A25 highway. The drive from Porto takes about an hour and a half. Upon arrival, guests can take advantage of free parking right at the entrance of the historic building.

Within the city itself, the best way to get around is on foot or by taxi, as the historic center is filled with charming cobblestone streets that are best explored during a leisurely stroll.

History & Facts

The history of this majestic building began in 1793 when Bishop Francisco Moreira Pereira de Azevedo laid the foundation stone for the future São Teotónio Hospital. Despite its early start, construction took decades due to the massive amount of heavy stone required for its thick walls, and the hospital only admitted its first patients in 1842.

The hospital served the city's residents for 155 years until it closed in 1997. After a decade of neglect, the building was given a second chance: in 2007, a large-scale reconstruction began under the guidance of renowned architect Gonçalo Byrne. The project cost approximately 8 million euros, allowing for the restoration of its historical appearance while harmoniously integrating modern architectural solutions.

Special attention during the restoration was paid to preserving original details: from the magnificent statues on the facade to the antique tiles in the corridors and stone staircases. To increase the number of rooms without disrupting the neoclassical ensemble, the architect added a fourth floor, cleverly disguised as part of the original roof design. The building celebrated its rebirth as a luxury hotel in February 2009.

Time Needed

If your goal is simply to stop by the famous restaurant or enjoy a glass of wine at the bar while admiring the interiors, it is recommended to set aside about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to enjoy the cuisine and explore the hotel's public areas.

For those who want to fully experience the atmosphere of relaxation, it is better to dedicate half a day or even a full day to visiting the spa center with its pools and hammam. The ideal option, however, is a full stay for 1–2 nights, allowing you to explore both the Pousada itself and the entire historic city center without any rush.

Working Hours

As a modern high-end hotel, Pousada Viseu welcomes guests 24/7. The reception desk is open around the clock, which is very convenient for travelers arriving in the city late in the evening or at night.

Nevertheless, if you plan to visit the restaurant or use the spa facilities without staying at the hotel, it is highly recommended to check their current schedules on the official website or by phone. Kitchen and pool hours may vary depending on the season and scheduled events.
