What to Do

The main reason to visit Pushkin Square is the chance to enjoy the peace and classical aesthetics of old Samara. Here, you can take a leisurely stroll through well-kept paths, admire the flowerbeds, and, of course, take a closer look at the memorial itself. It is a wonderful place to read poetry or simply relax on a bench in the shade of the trees.

For photography enthusiasts, the square offers stunning angles: the monument to Pushkin against the backdrop of the fairy-tale towers of the Drama Theater is one of Samara's most iconic shots. In the evening, when the decorative lighting comes on, the atmosphere becomes particularly romantic, making the memorial a popular spot for dates and evening walks.

Visitors can also use the square as a starting point for further exploration. Iconic sites like the Zhigulevsky Brewery and the mysterious Stalin’s Bunker are located nearby. For families with children, there are rest areas, making the location comfortable for tourists of all ages.

Getting There

The memorial is located in the historical center on Frunze Street, in the immediate vicinity of the Samara Academic Drama Theater. Thanks to this location, the square is easily accessible on foot while walking along the Volga Embankment or popular pedestrian streets such as Leningradskaya.

If you plan to use public transport, trams No. 3, 4, 5, 18, 20, and 23 are all suitable — you should get off at the "Drama Theater" stop. Numerous buses and minibuses also run here from various parts of the city. A trip from the Samara railway station by tram or bus takes about 20–30 minutes.

For those who prefer comfort, city taxi services are always available. A ride from central hotels to the square will be quick and affordable. For travelers with their own cars, parking areas are provided near the theater and square, although finding a free spot during the day can be challenging.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1899, when the Samara City Duma decided to create a square on the wasteland behind the Drama Theater in honor of the 100th anniversary of the great poet's birth. However, due to budget shortages, the work was only completed several years later thanks to the philanthropist Alfred von Vakano, who landscaped the area at his own expense and built a pavilion for poetry evenings.

Over its history, the memorial has seen three iterations. The first gypsum bust by sculptor Vadim Reitlinger was installed in 1905 but eventually crumbled. The second, a concrete monument, appeared in 1949 for Pushkin's 150th anniversary. The current metal half-length bust on an elegant column pedestal was unveiled in 1985. It was created by sculptors I.B. Fedorov and V.A. Fomin, and architect A. Morgun.

Interestingly, Samara was the first city on the Volga to install a monument to Alexander Pushkin. Although the poet himself never stayed in the provincial center, he traveled through the Samara province in 1833 while gathering materials for "The Captain's Daughter" and "The History of Pugachev."

Time Needed

Most tourists find 30–60 minutes sufficient for a leisurely walk through Pushkin Square, viewing the monument, and taking photos with the Drama Theater. It is an ideal spot for a short break during a busy sightseeing tour of the city.

If you choose to combine your visit with nearby iconic sites like Stalin’s Bunker or the Iversky Monastery, you should set aside about 1.5–2 hours. The square is also a great place to just sit on a bench with a book or enjoy the views of the Volga that open up nearby.

Working Hours

The Alexander Pushkin Memorial and the surrounding square are open to visitors 24/7. There are no days off or breaks, so you can come here in the early morning to catch the silence or late at night for a stroll under the lamplight.

Entrance to the square is free. No special tickets or registration are required. However, before visiting major events sometimes held in the square (such as Poetry Day), it is recommended to check the city’s event calendars.
