About

In the heart of the historic center lies a true architectural gem known as the Kurlina Mansion. This exquisite building houses the country's only Art Nouveau Museum, entirely dedicated to this elegant and mystical style. Located in the city of Samara, this site captivates with its flowing facade lines, unusual stuccowork, and wrought-iron details, which are considered a benchmark of Russian Art Nouveau in Russia.

Inside the museum, the wonderful atmosphere of the early 20th century has been recreated. Visitors can see authentic furniture, clothing, and decorative items created by European and Russian masters. The building itself, constructed in 1903 according to the design of architect A.U. Zelenko, is an exhibit in its own right: its interiors, stained glass windows, and layout reflect the philosophy of the style, where beauty and functionality merge into one.

Today, this site holds the status of a monument of federal significance. It is not just a repository of antiquities, but a living space hosting contemporary art exhibitions, festivals, and educational programs, making the history of Art Nouveau understandable and accessible to modern audiences.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the museum is the opportunity to peek into the past through the grand halls of the first floor. You can walk through the study, boudoir, and dining room, where authentic furniture, elegant dishware, and accessories allow you to imagine the life of a wealthy family from the beginning of the last century in detail. Pay special attention to the works of the famous French "School of Nancy" that grace the collection.

Beyond admiring the interiors, the museum offers a rich cultural program. It regularly hosts art history lectures, chamber concerts, and creative meet-ups. In the warmer months, museum life moves to the courtyard and garden, where festivals and interactive activities attract both young people and families with children.

Don't forget to go down to the basement or up to the second floor—these spaces often house temporary exhibitions from other museums' collections or works by contemporary Samara artists. The museum also organizes unique walking and cycling tours of the city, allowing you to see other Art Nouveau landmarks in their natural urban environment.

Getting There

Finding this architectural masterpiece in the city's historic center is easy. The museum is located at 159 Frunze Street. This area is perfect for walking, as it is surrounded by other historic quarters that preserve the spirit of old merchant Samara.

For those using public transport, it is most convenient to take a tram or bus to the "Ulitsa Frunze" or "Ulitsa Alekseevskaya" stops. If you are arriving from Kurumoch Airport, you can take a train or bus to the railway station and then transfer to tram No. 3 or a bus—the journey takes about an hour and a half.

If you prefer comfort, you can call a taxi from any part of the city. From the nearest metro stations (such as "Alabinskaya"), the trip to the museum will take no more than 10–15 minutes. Private car owners can leave their vehicles in the parking lot in the museum's courtyard or on adjacent streets, although finding a spot can be difficult on weekdays.

History & Facts

The story of this amazing place began in 1903, when Alexander Grigoryevich Kurlin, a merchant of the first guild, decided to build a luxurious home for his wife, Alexandra Pavlovna. The mansion became one of the city's first buildings designed in the Art Nouveau style. The project was developed by the talented architect Alexander Zelenko, who masterfully combined European Art Nouveau trends with local character.

Over the years, the building has served many roles. In the 1970s, it housed a kindergarten, and in the 1980s, a large-scale scientific restoration began. A milestone occurred in 1995 when a presidential decree granted the estate the status of a historical and cultural monument of federal significance. This highlighted the exceptional value of the site not only for the region but for the entire country.

The modern era of the museum began after a global reconstruction from 2008 to 2012. Craftsmen managed to restore not only the facade and roof but also the unique interiors and courtyard buildings. The official opening of the renovated Art Nouveau Museum took place in late December 2012, and it has since become a vital cultural center for the region.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the halls and enjoy the interior details, 1.5–2 hours is sufficient for most visitors. About an hour is spent getting to know the main exhibition on the first floor, which recreates early 20th-century life.

If there are temporary exhibitions on the second floor or in the basement during your visit, it's worth setting aside an additional 30–40 minutes. For those planning to attend a lecture, a concert, or participate in summer events in the cozy museum courtyard, we recommend planning for a half-day visit to fully immerse yourself in the cultural atmosphere.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes visitors six days a week, with a schedule designed to accommodate different types of guests. From Tuesday to Sunday (except Thursday), the doors are open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please note that Monday is the day off when the museum is closed to the public.

For those who prefer evening walks, Thursday has special operating hours: from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The museum ticket office usually stops selling tickets 30–60 minutes before closing, so plan your visit in advance to ensure you have time to see all the exhibits.
