How to get to AlUla

AlUla is a unique historical oasis and an open-air museum located in a picturesque valley in the northwest of Saudi Arabia. It is a place where ancient tombs are carved directly into the rocks, and desert landscapes blend with modern comfort and cultural festivals. You can reach this amazing corner in various ways: by a direct flight, by car from neighboring regions, or by combining different modes of transport for a true adventure.

The fastest and most convenient way to reach the region is by air. The city is served by the modern Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz International Airport (ULH), which welcomes approximately 400,000 passengers annually and is located in close proximity to the main attractions.

If direct tickets are unavailable, you can consider flying to nearby major cities with airports, such as Tabuk or Yanbu. However, it is worth noting that you will have to cover a significant distance by land from there to the final destination, so a direct flight to AlUla remains the most preferred option to save time.

Currently, the city of AlUla does not have its own railway station, so it is not yet possible to get here exclusively by train. The railway network of Saudi Arabia is actively developing, but for now, the tracks bypass this historical oasis.

The nearest major settlements, such as Tabuk or Al Wajh, are located at a distance of more than 150–200 kilometers. Travelers preferring ground transport are advised to combine their trip with car rental or use bus services from other regions of the country.

Since precise data on regular direct bus routes directly to AlUla is limited, travelers are advised to check schedules with national carriers in advance. The bus network of Saudi Arabia connects many cities, but trips to remote tourist zones may be infrequent or seasonal.

Most often, tourists use buses to reach major transport hubs in neighboring regions and cover the remaining part of the journey by taxi or transfer. This allows for flexible arrival planning without depending on the rigid schedule of public transport in the desert area.

Traveling by car is an excellent way to enjoy the desert landscapes on the way to AlUla. One of the shortest routes is the road from the city of Al Wajh: the distance is about 245 km, which will take approximately 2.8 hours on the road with normal traffic.

Routes from other regional centers are also popular: the journey from the city of Tabuk (about 297 km) will require around 3.4 hours of driving. If you are driving from the Red Sea side, from the city of Yanbu, the road stretching nearly 359 km will take about 4.4 hours. Renting a car or booking a taxi for such distances will ensure you have maximum freedom of movement.

A trip to AlUla is an immersion into unique culture and nature, requiring a little preparation for maximum comfort. To ensure your journey goes smoothly, pay attention to the following recommendations:

1. Clothing and Climate. Choose light, modest clothing made of natural fabrics to protect yourself from the sun and respect local traditions. Be sure to bring a warm sweater or jacket, as temperature fluctuations in the desert can be significant, especially in the evening.
2. Transport within the region. Distances between attractions are vast, so the best solution would be renting an SUV or hiring a driver. Walking between sites is practically impossible.
3. Finances. The official currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). Cards are accepted in hotels and major restaurants, but it is better to have cash for buying souvenirs or visiting small shops.
4. Health. The sun here is very active: constantly use sunscreen with high SPF, wear a head covering, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
5. Local Etiquette. Saudi Arabia is a country with conservative traditions. Avoid public displays of affection and always ask for permission before photographing local residents.
6. Planning Visits. Tickets for popular sites, such as Hegra, are best booked online well in advance, as the number of daily visitors may be limited.
7. What to Avoid. The import and consumption of alcohol and narcotics are strictly prohibited. Violation of this rule entails severe consequences.
