Casa Navàs

About

Located in the main square of Reus, Casa Navàs is one of the most impressive monuments of Catalan Modernism. This magnificent mansion was designed by the famous architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the early 20th century for a wealthy textile merchant. The building stands out with its ornate facade, decorated with complex stone carvings and organic motifs.

This architectural gem in Spain is considered unique because it has preserved more than 95% of its original interior. Inside, visitors will find luxurious halls with authentic furniture, exquisite stained glass, and masterfully crafted mosaics. Unlike many other Modernist houses, Casa Navàs has reached the present day almost unchanged, making it a living museum of the golden age of Catalan culture.

Casa Navàs is the only residential house by Domènech i Montaner that is fully open to the public. Its interiors showcase the incredible craftsmanship of the best decorators of that time, who created a harmonious space where every detail — from the door handle to the ceiling painting — is a work of art.

What to Do

Visiting Casa Navàs offers a unique opportunity to see a "living museum" of Modernism. During a guided tour, guests can explore luxurious living quarters and state rooms, where original silk tapestries, carved furniture by Gaspar Homar, and delicate ceramics have been preserved. Special attention should be paid to the stained glass: light passing through the multicolored panes creates a magical atmosphere in the rooms.

Be sure to go up to the upper salon, where huge windows offer a panoramic view of the bustling Plaça del Mercadal. Here, you can examine in detail the marble sculptures and mosaic panels decorating the walls. Art lovers will appreciate how the architect integrated various crafts — forging, carpentry, and painting — into a single ensemble, creating a space filled with symbolism of nature and harmony.

After exploring the interior, it’s pleasant to walk across the square itself to appreciate the building's majestic facade from the outside and take photos of its whimsical arches and balconies. A visit to Casa Navàs is often combined with a walk to other Modernist sites in the city, enjoying the atmosphere of Reus at one of the street cafes across from the mansion.

Getting There

The landmark is located in the heart of the historic center at Plaça del Mercadal, 5-7. If you are arriving in the city by train, the walk from the Reus (Renfe) railway station to the square will take about 10–12 minutes (approximately 800 meters). Regional trains run regularly from Barcelona to Reus, with a travel time of about 1.5 hours.

Reus Bus Station is also nearby — the walk will take about 15 minutes. For those who prefer private transport, it is recommended to leave your car in one of the public parking lots around the center, such as Parking Plaça del Mercadal, as the square itself is a pedestrian zone.

If you are at Reus Airport, you can reach the city center by taxi or a special bus shuttle in just 15–20 minutes. Thanks to the compactness of Reus's central part, the most convenient way to move between major tourist sites is on foot, enjoying the architecture of the surrounding buildings.

History & Facts

The history of Casa Navàs began in 1901 when the successful textile merchant Joaquim Navàs Padró decided to build a luxurious mansion that would serve as both a residence and a shop. The project was entrusted to Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the greatest architects of the era. Thanks to the client's vast fortune, construction was carried out with no budget limits, allowing for the involvement of Catalonia's best craftsmen.

The building was completed in 1908 and became a true symbol of the Renaixença — a period of cultural revival. Unlike many other Modernist monuments, Casa Navàs remained in the ownership of a single family for decades. This allowed the interior decoration to be preserved in its original form, despite changing fashions and historical events.

Nevertheless, the building did not escape damage: in 1938, during air raids, the magnificent corner tower and part of the roof were destroyed. The owner's family made great efforts to restore the interiors. In 2020, the facade pediment was fully restored, and large-scale work to return the historical appearance of the tower is expected to be completed by 2025, returning the main architectural accent to Plaça del Mercadal.

Time Needed

To fully explore the Casa Navàs mansion as part of a standard tour, you will need between 1 and 1.5 hours. This is enough time to carefully examine all the halls, appreciate the interior details, and learn the history of the Navàs family.

If you plan to combine your visit with a walk around the square and an inspection of the facades of neighboring Modernist buildings, we recommend setting aside about 2–3 hours for this area. This will allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of the city center and take beautiful photos without rushing.
