Overview

The city of Galle features a tropical monsoon climate, ensuring warm and humid weather year-round. Temperatures here are remarkably stable, with averages fluctuating within a comfortable range of 26°C to 28°C, making the city an attractive destination at any time. There are virtually no sharp temperature drops between day and night or between seasons, so travelers can count on consistent tropical warmth.

Despite the stable temperatures, Galle's climate has two distinct seasons defined by rainfall. The relatively dry season lasts from January to March. During these months, the number of rainy days is minimal, though brief showers are still possible. From April to November, the monsoon season arrives, bringing higher humidity and significantly more rainy days. While rainfall can be frequent during this period, it rarely lasts all day, leaving plenty of time for sunny intervals.

Therefore, when planning a trip to Galle, you should primarily consider the rainfall seasons. For beach holidays and long walks, the months from January to March are best. However, if you don't mind tropical downpours—which add a special charm and freshness to the landscape—Galle is happy to welcome you in any other month of the year.

Temperature

The climate in Galle is characterized as tropical, with consistently high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations are minimal, creating a sense of eternal summer. The average annual temperature stays within a very narrow range—from 26.2°C in January to a peak of 27.6°C in April. Thus, Galle lacks the traditional division into cold and warm seasons.

The hottest period is considered to be from February to April. During this time, daytime air temperatures often reach 29-30°C, and sometimes higher. April is the sweltering month, with an average maximum of 29.6°C. The "coolest" months are December and January, but even then, the average temperature is a comfortable 26.2-26.4°C, and daytime highs rarely drop below 28°C. The concept of "winter" does not exist here—the weather remains consistently warm all year round.

One of the key features of Galle's climate is the small difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Daily fluctuations rarely exceed 4-5°C. This means that nights are also very warm, with temperatures dropping only to 24-26°C. Travelers should expect consistently hot and humid weather regardless of the month of their trip, so light clothing made from natural fabrics is the best choice for a comfortable holiday.

Precipitation

The climate in Galle is characterized by high humidity and significant rainfall throughout the year. There is no clearly defined dry season, as rain is possible in almost any month. Instead, the weather is shaped by two monsoon periods that bring the bulk of the precipitation.

The wettest period lasts from April to November. Rainfall peaks in May, which sees the highest amount of precipitation (12 mm), with rainy weather occurring almost every day. A second peak occurs in the autumn, during October and November, when rainfall also reaches high levels of around 10 mm. During these months, as in the summer period, travelers should expect frequent and sometimes intense tropical downpours, with the number of rainy days reaching 28-30 per month.

Relatively drier weather sets in during February and March. This time of year sees the lowest annual rainfall, at only about 3 mm. However, even during these months, rain is not uncommon: February averages 15 rainy days, while March has about 20. This means that even during the "dryest" period, brief showers are possible, though their intensity is significantly lower than during the monsoons.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Galle, keep the tropical climate in mind as it dictates your packing list. It is warm and humid here year-round, so the core of your wardrobe should consist of lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Loose T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses will be the most comfortable choices for exploring the ancient fort and its streets. Don't forget sun protection: high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and sunglasses are essential companions for any trip to Sri Lanka.

Pay special attention to rainfall. While temperatures remain high, there is a high probability of rain in Galle almost all year round, especially from April to November when the number of rainy days peaks. Short but intense downpours are a frequent occurrence. To avoid being caught off guard, pack a lightweight raincoat or a compact umbrella. Clothes made of quick-drying materials are also very useful. Comfortable, water-resistant footwear, such as sandals, is a great addition to a closed pair of shoes for long walks.

In addition to daytime attire, remember your swimsuit for relaxing on the picturesque coast. For evening strolls or visits to air-conditioned places like restaurants and hotels, a light cardigan, pashmina, or long-sleeved shirt may come in handy. It's also worth bringing insect repellent, especially for evening use. And, of course, the most important thing is comfortable walking shoes, as the historic Galle Fort and its surroundings are best explored on foot.
