History & Facts

The history of this iconic landmark began in 1906, when hoteliers Anton Disler and Albert Riedweg purchased the building of a former seminary. Following a large-scale renovation, the modest three-story structure was transformed into a luxurious five-story hotel in the La Belle Époque style. The opening perfectly coincided with the tourism boom sparked by the launch of the St. Gotthard Tunnel, which made the region an important stop on the route to Italy.

A remarkable feature of the International au Lac is its generational continuity: for over 120 years, it has been managed by a single family — the Schmid family. Each generation has contributed to its development: in the 1960s, modern bathrooms were added to the rooms; in the 90s, the swimming pool and garden appeared; and in the early 2000s, the entrance area and conference rooms were updated. The grandmother of the current owners created the unique Galleria Degli Amici, assembling a collection of paintings by artists who were friends of the hotel.

In 2006, celebrating its centenary, a mini-museum was opened at the hotel, housing artifacts from past eras — from antique porcelain pitchers to the first telephones. Special recognition came in 2007 when the ICOMOS/UNESCO jury officially granted the property the honorary title of "Historic Hotel" for its careful preservation of architectural heritage and hospitality traditions.

Time Needed

To simply get acquainted with the building's architecture, visit the lobby, and explore the small museum exhibition on the first floor, you will need about 1–2 hours. This is enough time to soak in the early 20th-century atmosphere and take a few memorable photos.

If you plan to relax on the terrace overlooking the lake or enjoy a drink at the bar, it is worth setting aside half a day for your visit. For hotel guests, exploring its cozy corners, garden, and pool becomes a pleasant addition to a multi-day stay in the city.

Working Hours

As befits a first-class hospitality establishment in Lugano, International au Lac is open to its guests around the clock. The hotel administration and services operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring the comfort and safety of visitors at any time of day or night.

Whether you are planning a late arrival or an early morning walk to the lake, the doors of this historic building are always open. The operating schedule remains consistent from Monday to Sunday, including public holidays.
