The temple is built as a three-nave basilica with an eight-column structure, crowned by a massive dome. Its facades are richly decorated with arched niches, profiled cornices, and mirrors, giving the building a solemn and elegant appearance. The single-tier bell tower above the narthex serves as an important landmark in the skyline of the city's historical part.

Inside, the cathedral houses unique artistic treasures, including a 17th-century gilded oak iconostasis and wall paintings by the Czech master Fedor Paraliak. Surrounded by a semicircle of former Bernardine monastery buildings, the cathedral forms a cohesive historical ensemble that attracts visitors with its spiritual atmosphere and high traveler ratings.

What to Do

Start your visit to the cathedral with a leisurely stroll around the building to admire the details of the Baroque facade. Note the masterfully crafted decorative niches with keystones, the cornices, and the various window shapes — from classic arched to unique circular ones. Be sure to find the commemorative cross made of black labradorite and see the elegant water-blessing chapel located on the temple grounds.

Stepping inside, you'll find yourself in a space filled with light and history. The main focus here is the gilded iconostasis from the 17th century, considered a true masterpiece of church art. Take a look at the nine stone altars and the mid-20th-century frescoes that create the interior's unique character. If you're lucky enough to attend a service, you'll be able to fully appreciate the magnificent acoustics and the grandeur of the place.

Don't forget to photograph the entrance arch with its wrought-iron gates and the old Bernardine monastery buildings that form a cozy semicircle around the church. The cathedral courtyard offers pleasant views of the Styr River and historical quarters, making it an ideal spot for a quiet rest and immersion into the city's past.

Getting There

Finding the cathedral is easy — it is located in the heart of historical Lutsk at 1 Hradnyi Descent. If you are already in the old town, a walk from Teatralna Square or the Castle Tower will take only 5–10 minutes through picturesque pedestrian streets.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the 16th century when an Orthodox monastery stood on Hradna Hill, later replaced by the wooden Church of the Holy Cross. In 1643, the land was purchased for the Bernardine Order, and soon, with the blessing of King Władysław IV Vasa, monks settled here. The ensemble began to take on its stone appearance in the 18th century thanks to a generous donation from Karol Radziwiłł.

The construction of the current building began in 1737 according to the design of the famous Jesuit architect Paweł Giżycki. The construction dragged on for several decades, and it was finally consecrated only at the end of the 18th century by Bishop Adam Naruszewicz. During that period, the cathedral served as a Catholic church, being part of a large Bernardine monastery complex.

Significant changes occurred in the second half of the 19th century when the church was handed over to the Orthodox community. Architect Konstantin Rastrukhanov led a large-scale reconstruction: a majestic dome and a tall bell tower were erected over the building, and the exterior decor was altered to give it features more characteristic of the Orthodox tradition. The consecration of the renovated church took place on September 24, 1880.

The temple has functioned in its current status as the main Holy Trinity Cathedral since August 12, 1992. The cathedral continues to be updated: in 2014, facade work was carried out, and a modern water-blessing chapel and a commemorative cross made of black labradorite appeared on the grounds.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the architectural ensemble and the cathedral's interior, a typical tourist needs about 1–2 hours. This is sufficient for an external viewing of the ornate Baroque facades, visiting the church itself, and walking through the cozy inner courtyard of the monastery.

If you plan to study the ancient iconostasis in detail, examine the frescoes, or stay for a service, your visit time may increase. The cathedral is very conveniently located, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk to other sites in the old center.
