Stari Most, or the Old Bridge, is more than just a crossing; it is the soul and heart of the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This famous reconstructed pedestrian bridge over the emerald Neretva River is a magnificent example of 16th-century Ottoman architecture. Its graceful silhouette, connecting the two parts of the old town, has become the hallmark not only of Mostar but of the entire country.
The bridge's design is a true engineering marvel of its time. It consists of a slender stone arch with a span of 29 meters that seems to float above the river canyon. Local tenelija limestone, known for its durability and light hue, was used for construction. The stone blocks were held together by iron clamps and sealed with molten lead, providing the structure with incredible reliability.
