How to get to Bozhou

How to get there: Introduction

Bozhou is not merely a point on the map in the eastern part of China, but a true treasury of ancient culture and traditions. This city proudly bears the title of the global capital of Chinese medicine, as it was here that many healing practices used to this day originated. A special atmosphere is lent to the streets by centuries of history: Bozhou is considered the birthplace of the legendary warlord Cao Cao and the famous physician Hua Tuo, whose names are inextricably linked with the Han Dynasty era.

Beyond its unique medical heritage, the region is known for the production of the traditional spirit — baijiu, the aroma of which has become an integral part of the local atmosphere. A journey here will allow you to immerse yourself in the authentic life of Anhui province, explore majestic ancient temples, and touch upon the secrets of longevity that are carefully preserved by the local residents.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach Bozhou is to use direct air connections. The city is served by its own airport (BZJ), which receives domestic flights from various regions of China. This allows tourists to significantly save travel time and avoid long overland journeys.

In the event that tickets for a direct flight are unavailable or the schedule does not suit you, you may consider alternative routes through neighbouring air hubs. The nearest option is Fuyang Airport, located approximately 106 kilometres away. Travellers also frequently choose to fly to Xuzhou or Heze. A transfer from these cities to the final destination will take just a couple of hours by car or bus.

For international guests, the journey usually involves a connection in one of the major international hubs, such as Shanghai, Beijing, or Hefei. From there, regular domestic airlines provide convenient links both to Bozhou itself and to the nearest regional airports.

Tips for Travellers

Preparing for a trip to Bozhou requires attention to certain details to ensure the journey is as comfortable and hassle-free as possible. We have compiled a list of practical recommendations for you that will help you easily navigate the city and enjoy its unique atmosphere.

  1. Clothing and Seasonality. The climate in the region is temperate, with clearly defined seasons. Summers can be hot and humid, so opt for light, natural fabrics. In winter, temperatures can drop below freezing, so a warm jacket and hat are mandatory. For walking through markets and temples, choose the most comfortable footwear possible.
  2. Transport. The most comfortable way to move around the city is by taxi, which is relatively inexpensive here. To book a car, it is better to install local apps (such as DiDi), as flagging a car down on the street can be more difficult. City buses run regularly, but route maps are often displayed only in characters.
  3. Finances and Payment. In China, mobile payments via WeChat Pay and Alipay are used almost everywhere. Cash is not accepted everywhere, and difficulties may arise with international cards in small shops. We recommend installing payment apps and linking your card in advance, but keep a small supply of cash yuan just in case.
  4. Health and Safety. Bozhou is a safe city, but drinking tap water is strictly not recommended; please buy bottled water. Since the city is the capital of traditional medicine, pharmacies are at every step, however, for purchasing familiar Western medicines, it is better to have their names in Chinese or a photo of the packaging with you.
  5. Language Barrier. English is rarely understood here; even in hotels, staff may speak only their native language. Be sure to download an offline translator to your smartphone with voice input and photo translation functions — this will become your main tool for communication.
  6. Local Etiquette. The Chinese value restraint and respect. It is best to greet locals with a slight nod. At the table, observe an important rule: never stick chopsticks vertically into a bowl of rice — this resembles ritual offerings to spirits and is considered a bad omen.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not use the services of unlicensed carriers at stations to avoid inflated prices. Also, try not to photograph locals without their permission, especially elderly people, as some may perceive this negatively.
  8. Unique Tip. Since you are in the capital of Chinese pharmacology, visit the medicinal herb trading centre early in the morning. Even if you do not plan to buy anything, the scale of the trade and the aromas of thousands of herbs will give you unforgettable impressions that are impossible to get in other cities.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid most everyday difficulties and focus on exploring the rich history and culture of this amazing region. May your acquaintance with the city leave only pleasant memories!
