Baggage Allowances and Policies
China Southern Airlines applies a "Piece Concept" for baggage on international routes, including flights connecting the Middle East to China. Understanding these rules ensures a smooth check-in process at Dubai International Airport and hassle-free transfers upon arrival in Guangzhou or other destinations. Policies may vary based on your specific ticket class and frequent flyer status.
Carry-on Baggage
Passengers are permitted to bring cabin baggage on board, subject to strict weight and size limitations to ensure safety and comfort.
- Economy and Premium Economy Class: Typically allowed 1 piece weighing no more than 8 kg (17 lbs).
- Business and First Class: Generally allowed 2 pieces, with each piece weighing no more than 8 kg.
- Dimensions: The sum of the three dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 115 cm (approx. 45 inches).
In addition to the standard allowance, passengers may carry small personal items such as a laptop bag, handbag, or briefcase, provided they fit under the seat in front of you.
Checked Baggage Limits
For international flights between the UAE and China, the checked baggage allowance is generous, accommodating the needs of long-haul travelers.
- Economy Class: Passengers are usually entitled to 2 pieces, each weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Premium Economy Class: typically includes 2 pieces, each weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Business Class: The allowance increases to 2 pieces, with a higher weight limit of 32 kg (70 lbs) per piece.
- First Class: Passengers enjoy the maximum allowance of 3 pieces, each weighing up to 32 kg (70 lbs).
The total dimensions (L + W + H) of each checked bag should not exceed 158 cm (62 inches). Bags exceeding these limits may incur oversize fees.
Excess Baggage and Special Items
If you plan to travel with more luggage than your free allowance permits, excess baggage fees will apply. These are calculated based on the number of extra pieces, weight, or size. It is highly recommended to purchase extra baggage allowance online in advance, as rates at the airport are typically higher.
Sports Equipment and Musical Instruments:
Items such as golf bags, bicycles, or skis can often be included as part of your free checked baggage allowance if they meet size and weight restrictions. Larger musical instruments like cellos may require purchasing an extra seat (Cabin Seat Baggage) or must be checked as special cargo. Always contact the airline at least 48 hours before departure to reserve space for bulky items.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
China Southern enforces strict safety regulations, particularly regarding batteries and flammable items. Please pay close attention to the following rules to avoid confiscation of your belongings:
- Lithium Batteries and Power Banks: These must ONLY be carried in your carry-on baggage. They are strictly prohibited in checked luggage. Power banks must clearly show their capacity (Wh) and generally must not exceed 100Wh (up to 160Wh requires airline approval). Power banks without clear labeling will be confiscated.
- Lighters and Matches: According to Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) regulations, lighters and matches are strictly forbidden in both carry-on and checked baggage. Do not pack them.
- Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs): In carry-on bags, these must be in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag.
Tips for Packing Efficiently
To ensure a seamless journey to Shenzhen, Wuhan, or beyond, consider these packing tips:
- Label Everything: Attach a durable luggage tag with your name, phone number, and email address to every bag. Placing a copy of your itinerary inside the bag is also a smart backup.
- Check Your Power Bank: Before you fly, verify that your portable charger has a visible specification label. If the label is worn off, it may not be allowed through security in China.
- Weigh Before You Go: Use a portable luggage scale to ensure your bags are within the 23kg or 32kg limits to avoid repacking at the check-in counter.
- Lock It: Use TSA-approved locks to secure your checked bags, allowing security personnel to inspect them without damage if necessary.
