General Weather Overview

The climate in Zhangjiajie can be described as humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons. This means the weather here undergoes significant changes throughout the year, offering diverse conditions for travellers.

Summer in Zhangjiajie (from June to August) is usually hot and humid, with average temperatures hovering around 23-27°C, and maximums often exceeding 30°C. This period is also characterized by the highest rainfall; for example, July can have up to 21 rainy days. Winters (from December to February) are cool here, with average temperatures around 4-6°C, although night temperatures can drop to 1-2°C. Winter months are generally drier, with the least precipitation in December.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with more moderate temperatures. Spring sees gradual warming and an increase in rainy days, preparing nature for the lushness of summer. Autumn brings gradual cooling and reduced rainfall, creating comfortable conditions for walking and enjoying the famous landscapes of Zhangjiajie.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Zhangjiajie is characterized by significant seasonal fluctuations. The annual range of average temperatures extends from approximately 4.1°C in January to 26.7°C in August. The coldest month is January, when the average minimum temperature drops to 1.0°C, and the average maximum does not exceed 7.2°C. The hottest period falls in July and August: in these months, the average temperature stays at the level of 26.6-26.7°C, with daily highs regularly reaching 30.0-30.3°C.

The summer months, from June to August, are quite hot in Zhangjiajie. Average daytime temperatures during this period are 27-30°C, while nights remain warm with minimum temperatures around 20.7-23.2°C. Winter, especially December and January, brings coolness. Average daily highs in these months fluctuate around 7-9°C, and night temperatures can drop to 1-2.5°C, which is close to the freezing point. Noticeable daily temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year: the difference between daily highs and nightly lows is usually about 6-7.5°C, which is worth considering when planning your wardrobe for the trip.

Precipitation

In Zhangjiajie, there is a clear division of the year into wetter and drier seasons. The period with the highest amount of precipitation usually falls in late spring and summer, reaching a peak in the number of rainy days in mid-summer. Winter months, conversely, are characterized by minimal precipitation and the fewest number of wet days.

The highest volume of precipitation is recorded in June, averaging 9 mm. However, in terms of rain frequency, July stands out – this month counts about 21 rainy days. May and June are also distinguished by a high probability of precipitation, with approximately 19 rainy days in each. This means that in the period from late spring to mid-summer (roughly from May to July), it rains often. At the same time, judging by the total monthly amount, the precipitation may not be too heavy; rather, these are frequent but moderate or light rains. Spring months, such as March (5 mm, 17 wet days) and April (7 mm, 18 wet days), show a gradual increase in precipitation.

The driest period in Zhangjiajie is winter. December is the driest month, with only 1 mm of precipitation and approximately 7 rainy days. November is also characterized by a small amount of precipitation (about 2 mm) and approximately 12 rainy days. Winter precipitation most often falls in the form of light rain or drizzle, considering that average temperatures usually remain above freezing. Autumn months, such as August (4 mm, 16 wet days) and September (4 mm, 13 wet days), demonstrate a gradual decrease in the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days, smoothly transitioning to the dry winter season.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Zhangjiajie, it is important to carefully choose your wardrobe, as the weather here changes noticeably throughout the year. The key principle should be layering, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature fluctuations. Regardless of the season, comfortable waterproof shoes for long walks on mountain trails are an absolute necessity. In the spring-summer period (from March to August), when the number of rainy days increases significantly (up to 17-21 days per month), be sure to take a light raincoat or a sturdy umbrella with you. In summer, with average temperatures of 23-27°C and highs above 30°C, choose light, breathable clothing, and do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

In autumn (September-November), the weather becomes cooler, with average temperatures from 11°C to 23°C, so your suitcase should contain warm items: sweaters, fleece jackets, and a windbreaker. Winter in Zhangjiajie (December-February) is quite cold, with average temperatures holding at 4-6°C, and at night they can drop to 1-2°C. For this time of year, you will need a warm jacket (possibly a down jacket), a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although winter is the driest season with minimal rainfall, light waterproof outerwear may still come in handy. A small backpack for water, snacks, and a change of clothes will also be useful during excursions around the picturesque surroundings of Zhangjiajie.
