General Weather Overview

The climate welcoming travellers to Dominica can be described as tropical and humid. Eternal summer reigns here, and air temperatures remain consistently high and comfortable throughout the year. Thanks to the ocean's influence and constant trade winds, the heat on the coast does not feel exhausting, while the mountainous regions of the island always offer a pleasant coolness.

The weather changes insignificantly during the year, though it is customary to distinguish two conditional seasons: the drier one and the rainy season. The dry period, which usually falls in the first half of the year, delights with a large number of sunny days and is considered optimal for a beach holiday. In the rainy season, precipitation occurs more frequently and intensely, but usually takes the form of powerful yet short-lived tropical downpours, after which the sun quickly shines again.

A distinct feature of the local weather is its dynamism and high humidity, thanks to which the island is immersed in lush greenery. Tourists should be prepared for a quick, refreshing rain shower even on the clearest day. Such an atmosphere is ideal for those who wish to enjoy the vibrancy of tropical nature and see the local waterfalls in all their power.

Temperature

The climate on the island of Dominica can be characterized as tropical trade-wind, guaranteeing warm weather practically all year round. There are no sharp seasonal changes typical of temperate latitudes here, so travellers can count on consistently comfortable conditions in any month. The annual temperature range remains steady, creating an ideal atmosphere for both beach relaxation and exploring the island's famous rainforests.

The conditional "winter" season, lasting from December to April, brings the most pleasant weather: it becomes slightly drier, and the heat is softened by refreshing winds. Summer months and early autumn are usually characterized by higher temperatures and increased humidity. During this period, it can be quite hot, however, sea breezes on the coast help make the high temperatures easier to bear, making the climate quite suitable for active tourism.

It is important to consider that temperature sensations may vary depending on your location on the island. While constant warmth prevails at coastal resorts, the air in the mountainous inland regions is always fresher and cooler. The difference between day and night readings on the coast is generally insignificant, but in the mountains, light long-sleeved clothing may be required in the evenings.

Precipitation

Dominica is an island with a humid tropical climate, thanks to which local nature is distinguished by incredible lushness and greenery. Rainfall occurs here throughout the year, but its distribution is uneven. A difference between the wet season and the drier period is clearly traceable, which is worth considering when planning a trip.

The rainy season usually lasts from June to November. During these months, precipitation falls more often and can be quite intense. A characteristic feature of the local weather is strong but short-lived tropical showers, which are quickly replaced by bright sunshine. Prolonged rains happen rarely, so even during this period, one can enjoy relaxation and excursions to waterfalls, which become particularly full-flowing.

The relatively dry season falls on the period from January to April. At this time, the number of rainy days noticeably decreases, and air humidity becomes more comfortable. If precipitation does occur, it is most often in the form of a light, refreshing drizzle, mainly in mountain areas and at night. This is the ideal time for hiking and long walks around the island.

What to Pack

When setting off on a journey to Dominica, it is worth remembering that a humid tropical climate prevails here, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, loose shirts, and summer dresses made of cotton or linen will be most comfortable in hot weather. Do not forget reliable sun protection: sunscreen with a high SPF factor, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and high-quality sunglasses are simply essential under the bright Caribbean sun.

Since the island is known for its lush nature, rain is a frequent and sometimes sudden phenomenon here, regardless of the season. Be sure to pack a light raincoat or a compact umbrella in your suitcase, which will not take up much space. For exploring national parks and walking to waterfalls, comfortable trekking boots or sneakers with non-slip soles will be required. We also recommend bringing special swimming shoes (aqua shoes) to enter the water comfortably on rocky sections or near rivers.

Evenings on the island can be warm, but for protection against mosquitoes and other insects, it is recommended to bring light long-sleeved clothing and trousers. High-quality repellents will become your best assistants during evening walks or excursions into the jungle. Given the high humidity, items may take longer to dry than usual, so the principle of layering and having spare sets of clothes will be very useful.
