The walls, stretching for nearly 4,330 meters, were built in the 14th–15th centuries to protect the papal residence not only from marauders but also from the flooding of the Rhône River. Today, this ensemble, which includes 39 towers and numerous gates, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is not just a defensive structure but a true stone chronicle, preserving the traces of the work of medieval stonemasons and the great restorers of the past.

Strolling along these ancient fortifications, you will notice a variety of architectural forms: from austere square towers to elegant Neo-Gothic arches added in later eras. This place is perfect for those who want to feel the atmosphere of old Provence and see how history is harmoniously woven into the modern life of the city.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the walls is the opportunity to take an atmospheric walk along their upper level. From the height of the fortifications, magnificent panoramas open up over the tiled roofs of the old city, the majestic Rhône, and the famous Saint-Bénézet Bridge. This is a perfect location for photo sessions, especially in the rays of the setting sun, when the stones of the walls take on a deep golden hue.

Be sure to pay attention to the details: stonemasons' engravings—unique signatures of medieval masters—have been preserved on many blocks. Exploring the various city gates can also be a fascinating quest. For example, Porte de la République will delight Neo-Gothic lovers, while Porte du Rhône will transport you back to the era of the austere 14th century.

If you find yourself here in summer, you will witness the walls turning into the backdrop for the famous Avignon Festival. During this time, life bustles around the fortifications, with street performances and a festive spirit in the air. A walk by the walls is easy to combine with a visit to the Palais des Papes or relaxing in the Rocher des Doms gardens, where the fortifications can be seen in the palm of your hand.

Getting There

The Avignon City Walls surround the historic city center, so they are impossible to miss. If you arrive by train at the Avignon-Centre station, you will see the majestic Porte de la République (Republic Gate) literally across the street—this is one of the most convenient starting points for your tour.

For those traveling by car, it is most convenient to follow the A7/E15 highways. Several parking lots are available near the walls, including Parking du Palais des Papes. If you prefer public transport, buses and high-speed TGV trains run regularly to the city from Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, and Lyon.

Within the city itself, the best way to get around is on foot, as the walls form a ring around pedestrian zones. You can also use the free shuttles or the tram that run between the main transport hubs and the entrances to the old city.

History & Facts

The history of these powerful fortifications is inextricably linked to the period of the "Avignon Papacy" in the 14th century. It was during this time, when the city became the temporary residence of the popes, that the need for reliable protection arose. The construction was carried out by order of the popes, including John XXII, who hired entire guilds of stonemasons to build walls capable of withstanding both enemy raids and the whims of the temperamental Rhône River.

Interestingly, you can still see the marks of medieval craftsmen on the stones. Each group of builders left their symbols on the blocks to receive their deserved payment at the end of the work. In the 15th century, after a devastating flood, the walls were restored by Giuliano della Rovere, who later became famous as Pope Julius II.

In the 19th century, the famous restorer Eugène Viollet-le-Duc took over the preservation of the monument. Thanks to his meticulous work, the southern facade of the walls, their battlements, and gates acquired the majestic appearance we see today. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the fortifications have been officially recognized as a historical monument and are now a vital part of the UNESCO heritage.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll along a significant part of the fortifications and see the main gates, tourists usually need about 1.5–2.5 hours. The total length of the ring is over 4 kilometers, so the visit time depends heavily on whether you plan to walk the entire route or only its key sections.

If you decide to combine your tour of the walls with a visit to the Palais des Papes or a walk across the famous Saint-Bénézet Bridge, we recommend setting aside at least half a day for this area.

Working Hours

Exterior viewing of the walls is available 24/7, as they surround residential neighborhoods. However, access to the equipped walkway galleries (upper tiers) is usually open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. It is worth noting that access to some sections may be closed on Sundays.

Before visiting, we recommend checking the city's official tourism portal, as opening hours may change depending on the season or ongoing restoration work.
