General Overview
Shopping in Propriano is not a pursuit of high fashion or a marathon through huge malls, but rather a pleasant addition to your vacation. The atmosphere here is relaxed and intimate: instead of retail giants, you will find cozy boutiques, family-run shops, and souvenir stores. The town is famous for its handicrafts and gastronomic delicacies, so purchases here often have a "tasty" or authentic character that reflects the spirit of Corsica.
Main Shopping Districts and Streets
The heart of the town's commercial life is Avenue Napoléon. This main street, which runs through the entire town, concentrates most of the clothing stores, beach accessories, and souvenir shops. Strolling here, you can find quality summer items from French brands as well as products by local designers. Another important shopping zone is the port and promenade area, located in close proximity to where Propriano Beach is situated. Here, trade is geared toward tourists: many shops sell jewelry, postcards, and beach equipment.
Shopping Centers
Due to its modest size, Propriano does not have the large shopping and entertainment centers common in metropolises. Fans of large-scale shopping should head to Ajaccio. In Propriano itself and on its outskirts, chain supermarkets (such as Casino or Carrefour Market) operate, where you can buy groceries, wine, and essential goods. They are excellent for those renting apartments and planning to cook for themselves.
Markets
The true flavor of Corsica can be felt at the local markets. Although Propriano doesn't have a huge indoor market, open-air fairs are regularly organized during the season. This is the best place to buy the freshest fruits, vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, and meat delicacies. Often, these mini-markets pop up in the morning near the port area, offering tourists a chance to sample local farm products before buying.
Souvenirs
From Propriano, it is worth bringing back goods that the whole island is proud of. First and foremost, pay attention to gastronomy: the famous smoked sausages (prisuttu, coppa), sheep's cheese, and jars of chestnut jam or maquis honey. Local wines or myrtle liqueur make excellent gifts. Craft connoisseurs will appreciate traditional Corsican knives with a curved blade and a handle made of horn or wood. Jewelry made of red coral, which is harvested in the waters of the Mediterranean, and cosmetics based on immortelle essential oil are also popular.
Opening Hours and Payment
Shops in Propriano usually open around 9:00 or 10:00 AM. It is important to remember the traditional lunch break (siesta), which can last from 12:30 to 2:30 PM or even until 3:00 PM, especially on hot summer days. In the evening, shopping continues until 7:00–8:00 PM, and during the peak tourist season, souvenir shops may stay open longer. Sunday is generally a day off, although grocery stores may operate in the first half of the day. Visa and MasterCard are accepted almost everywhere, but for purchases at the market or for small souvenirs, it's better to have some cash in euros.
Tax Free
Tourists residing permanently outside the European Union are entitled to a VAT refund (Tax Free). In France, the minimum purchase amount for a tax refund is 100 euros on a single receipt. Look for "Tax Free" stickers in windows or ask sellers for "Détaxe." Given the nature of Propriano's small shops, this service is not available everywhere; it is most often offered in clothing boutiques or jewelry salons.
