Overview

Lombok, located in Indonesia, boasts a tropical climate characterized by warm weather throughout the year. Average annual temperatures are very stable, ranging between 25-27°C, which creates comfortable conditions for a getaway at almost any time. You won't encounter sharp temperature drops; however, it is worth paying attention to the changing seasons.

Lombok's climate features two distinct main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season usually lasts from May to October, bringing minimal rainfall and more sunny days. The months from July to September are particularly dry and sunny. Conversely, the rainy season falls between November and April, with peak precipitation and the highest number of rainy days in December, January, February, and March. During these months, rain can be frequent, but it is usually tropical downpours that quickly give way to the sun.

Therefore, when planning a trip to Lombok, consider these seasonal characteristics. If you prefer dry and sunny weather, the ideal time to visit is from May to October. If you don't mind occasional rain that refreshes the tropical heat, Lombok is welcoming year-round, offering consistently warm temperatures.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Lombok is remarkably consistent, typical of a tropical paradise. Warmth prevails throughout the year, with average monthly temperatures fluctuating within a narrow range from 25.1°C in July to 26.9°C in October. The hottest months, when the thermometer regularly rises above 30°C during the day, are September and especially October, when the average maximum temperature reaches 30.8°C. The "coolest" months, if one can call them that in the tropics, are July and August, when average nighttime temperatures drop to 21.4°C and daytime temperatures stay at a comfortable 28.8-29.5°C.

During the warmest months, which occur approximately from May to November with a peak in September–October, the weather on Lombok is characterized as hot and sunny. Daytime temperatures stay confidently around 29-31°C, creating ideal conditions for beach holidays and water activities. Although humidity can be high, especially at the beginning and end of this period—coinciding with the transition phases to the rainy season—overall, this time offers many clear days.

The relative "winter" period, which in Lombok falls in June, July, and August, brings some refreshment while remaining very warm. Average daytime temperatures during these months are around 29°C, while nighttime temperatures drop to a pleasant 21-22°C. It is during these months, coinciding with the height of the dry season, that the most noticeable daily temperature fluctuations are observed: the difference between the daytime maximum and the nighttime minimum can reach 7-8°C. This means that evenings and early mornings can be significantly fresher, adding comfort after a hot day. In other months, especially during the rainy season, temperature fluctuations between day and night are less pronounced, at about 5-6°C.

Precipitation

The climate of Lombok is characterized by a distinct alternation between wet and dry seasons, which directly affects the amount and frequency of precipitation throughout the year. Understanding these features will help you choose the most comfortable time to travel to this Indonesian island and properly prepare for the weather conditions.

The rainy season on Lombok typically lasts from November to April. During this period, precipitation occurs very frequently, yet the total amount remains low. The highest number of rainy days falls in January and March (30 days each), as well as December (29 days) and February (28 days). Despite this, the average monthly rainfall in these wettest months is only 11-12 mm (for example, 12 mm in March and December, and 11 mm in January and February). November also belongs to the wet season, bringing about 10 mm of precipitation and approximately 26 rainy days. This pattern—many "wet" days with low overall millimeter readings—indicates that precipitation during this time consists primarily of frequent but very light drizzle or fine mist, rather than heavy downpours.

The dry season in Lombok sets in from May to October, bringing a significant reduction in both the frequency and total amount of precipitation. The driest months are July, August, and September: only 1 mm of rainfall occurs in each of these months. August records the minimum number of rainy days—just 5. July has about 6, and September has 8. May and June also maintain mostly dry weather with 2 mm of rainfall and about 10 rainy days each. October can be considered a transition period to the rainy season: the amount of precipitation slightly increases to 3 mm, and the number of rainy days rises to 13.

Packing Tips

When packing for your trip to Lombok, focus on the island's tropical climate. The basis of your wardrobe should be lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, sundresses, and light trousers will be suitable year-round thanks to the consistently warm weather with average temperatures of 25-27°C. Don't forget your swimwear, as the beach life here is magnificent. Important accessories include sunscreen with high SPF, headwear (a hat or cap), and sunglasses to protect against the bright tropical sun, especially during the dry season from May to October.

Given the change of seasons, a few adjustments are worth making. During the dry season (May–October), when rainfall is minimal (especially from July to September, with only 1 mm), the main focus is on sun protection. However, as nighttime temperatures in July and August can drop to 21.4°C, a light sweater or pashmina might come in handy for evening walks. In the rainy season (November–April), despite the low total rainfall (10-12 mm in peak months), there are significantly more rainy days (up to 30 days in January and March). Therefore, be sure to bring a light raincoat or a compact umbrella. Quick-drying fabrics are also an advantage during this period. Since the rain here is most often a light drizzle rather than prolonged downpours, heavy waterproof gear is not necessary.

Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes are your best friend on Lombok. Sandals or flip-flops are ideal for the beach and casual walks, while light sneakers or closed shoes may be needed for exploring the island and more active pursuits. Insect repellent is also a good idea, especially for the evening. While layering isn't very relevant due to the stable high temperatures, a light wrap or long-sleeved shirt can protect against the sun during the day, as well as evening chill or mosquitoes.
