Overview

Located in the heart of Indonesia, Ubud boasts a tropical climate with warm weather year-round. Average annual temperatures vary only slightly, staying within a comfortable range of 23°C to 28°C. This means that regardless of when you visit, you'll be greeted by pleasant warmth, perfect for exploring the region's cultural treasures and natural beauty.

Ubud has two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season typically lasts from November to April. During these months, rainfall is more frequent, resulting in a higher number of rainy days—for example, there can be 28–30 rainy days in January, February, and March. However, showers are often short-lived and refreshing. The dry season, from May to October, is characterized by significantly less rainfall and more sunny days. In July and August, for instance, the number of rainy days drops to 14–16, with minimal precipitation.

Despite the rainy season, air temperatures in Ubud remain consistently high and comfortable. This makes Ubud an attractive travel destination throughout the year, although those who prefer to minimize the chance of rain should plan their trip during the dry season months.

Temperature

Temperature patterns in Ubud are remarkably consistent throughout the year, which is typical for its tropical location. Average monthly temperatures fluctuate within a very narrow range, primarily between 23.7°C and 25.7°C. This means you can always count on warmth, though there are slight nuances regarding the hottest and "coolest" periods, as well as how the temperature feels due to humidity.

The warmest months in Ubud are generally March and April, when the average temperature reaches 25.6–25.7°C and daytime highs consistently stay around 27.9°C. The period from November to February is also very warm, with average temperatures around 25.5°C and highs in the 27.5–27.8°C range. During these months, which often coincide with the wetter season, the heat can feel more intense due to higher humidity, creating a typical tropical atmosphere.

The "coolest" months by Ubud's standards are July and August, when the average temperature drops to 23.7°C. During this time, minimum nighttime temperatures can reach a pleasant 21.3–21.5°C, while daytime highs usually do not exceed 25.9–26.2°C. This period is often characterized by less rainfall, making the weather feel especially comfortable and less sweltering. The temperature variation between day and night in Ubud is moderate, usually around 4–5 degrees Celsius. The largest difference, about 5.3°C, is observed in October, offering a pleasant freshness in the evenings after a warm day.

Precipitation

Ubud experiences distinct seasonal rainfall typical of its tropical climate. The year is clearly divided into a wet season, bringing significant rainfall, and a drier period when the intensity and frequency of precipitation decrease noticeably. Understanding these climatic features will help you better plan your trip to this amazing corner of Indonesia.

The period from November to April is known as the rainy season in Ubud. During this time, precipitation becomes the dominant weather feature. The highest number of rainy days occurs in March (30 days), as well as January (29 days) and February (28 days), when the probability of rain is very high and it can occur almost daily. In terms of total volume, January and February lead, each receiving an average of 13 mm of rainfall. These are followed closely by March, November, and December, with 12 mm each. Rainfall during this season usually takes the form of tropical downpours, which can be quite intense but are often followed by clear spells that refresh the air.

From May to October, Ubud enters its dry season, which brings a significant reduction in rainfall. The driest months in terms of precipitation are July, August, and September, when the average monthly rainfall is only 2 mm. The fewest rainy days are observed in August—averaging only 14 days. While short rains are still possible during this period, they are generally much less frequent and less intense than during the wet season. This makes the dry season months more predictable and comfortable for excursions and outdoor activities.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Ubud, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to stay comfortable in its tropical climate. With the average annual temperature staying between 23–28°C, your luggage should primarily consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or rayon. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and lightweight trousers are ideal choices. Given the high probability of rain year-round—ranging from 14–16 rainy days in the dry season (July–August) to 28–30 days in the rainy season (November–March)—a compact raincoat or folding umbrella is essential. A light sweater or shawl will also come in handy for evening walks or air-conditioned spaces, as even a slight drop in temperature can be noticeable.

During the rainy season (roughly November to April), when precipitation reaches 12–13 mm per month, opt for quick-drying clothes and consider bringing a spare pair of shoes. Regardless of the season, don't forget sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat or cap, and sunglasses, as the tropical sun is very intense. For exploring Ubud's many attractions, walking through rice fields, and visiting temples, comfortable walking shoes—such as light sneakers or sturdy sandals—are a must. To visit temples, you will also need clothing that covers your shoulders and knees (for example, a sarong, which can often be rented on-site, or lightweight long trousers and a sleeved shirt).
