Palazzo Doria Tursi

About

In the heart of the historic quarter that Genoa is so proud of stands a majestic building — Palazzo Doria Tursi. Built in the 16th century, this palace is considered the grandest and most luxurious on the famous Via Garibaldi. As part of the "Palazzi dei Rolli" system, it embodies the power and wealth of the Genoese aristocracy during its Golden Age.

The palace's architectural appearance impresses with a harmony of pink stone, white marble, and dark slate. The facade is decorated with elegant mascarons and loggias, while the interior hides cozy gardens with fountains. Today, the building serves a dual role: it is the City Hall (the mayor's residence) and simultaneously an important part of the museum complex open to travelers visiting a country like Italy.

The significance of this site is confirmed by its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors are drawn not only by the lush Mannerist architecture but also by the unique collections held within its walls. This is a place where the city's history intertwines with great art, creating the unique atmosphere of an Italian palazzo.

What to Do

The main draw for music lovers within the palace walls is the famous violin "Il Cannone" (The Cannon). This legendary instrument, crafted by the master Guarneri del Gesù, belonged to the great virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. Seeing the violin and the maestro's personal belongings is a must for every guest. Additionally, there is a rich "civic collection" including ancient coins, weights, measures, and exquisite ceramics.

Art enthusiasts should pay attention to the art galleries. Here you can see the famous sculpture "Penitent Magdalene" by Antonio Canova, as well as canvases by renowned masters like Alessandro Magnasco. Many exhibits complement the collections of the neighboring Palazzo Bianco, creating a unified cultural space.

It is equally interesting to simply explore the building's architecture. Stroll through the open loggias and courtyards, where the play of light on the marble stairs creates perfect conditions for photos. The upper levels offer picturesque views of the historic buildings. The palace also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events dedicated to contemporary art and city history.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the heart of the historic center at Via Garibaldi, 9. Since this street is part of the Strada Nuova pedestrian zone, a walk to the site will be a pleasant part of your route. If you arrive by train, the walk from Genova Piazza Principe station will take about 15 minutes (1 km), and from Genova Brignole station, about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace.

For those who prefer public transport, it is convenient to use buses (for example, routes No. 36 or No. 39) or the funicular going to Piazza De Ferrari. From the square, it is just a short walk towards Via Garibaldi. Metro stations are also within walking distance, making the palace easily accessible from anywhere in the city.

If you are traveling by car, keep in mind that parking in the center is very limited. It is recommended to leave your car in one of the large paid parking lots, for example, in the area of Piazza Corvetto or Porto Antico, and then continue on foot, enjoying the ancient architecture of Genoa.

History & Facts

The history of this grand structure began in 1565. It was commissioned by the wealthy banker Niccolò Grimaldi, whom contemporaries respectfully called "The Monarch" for his unimaginable fortune. To build the largest palace on the prestigious new street, he bought three plots of land at once. The architects were the Ponzello brothers, who created a masterpiece in the Mannerist style.

In 1593, the unfinished building passed into the hands of the Doria family. Prince Giovanni Andrea Doria purchased it for his son Carlo, Duke of Tursi, whose name remains attached to the palazzo to this day. It was under the new owners that the famous side loggias with arcades and the magnificent white marble portal, decorated with figures of warriors and the family crest, appeared.

The status of the palace was always exceptionally high: it was among the buildings intended to receive the Republic's most honored guests — kings, popes, and emperors. In the 19th century, it even served as the residence of Savoy King Victor Emmanuel I. Since 1848 and continuing to the present day, the building has served an important administrative function as the seat of the Genoa Municipality.

Today, Palazzo Doria Tursi is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a prime example of Europe's first centralized urban development project carried out according to a single architectural plan, making it a priceless monument of the Renaissance era.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main halls of the palace, admire Paganini's famous violin, and walk through the courtyards with their play of stairs and levels, you should set aside about 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to feel the scale of the building and appreciate its interior details.

However, remember that Palazzo Doria Tursi is part of the unified Strada Nuova museum complex. If you plan to also visit the neighboring Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso, which are interconnected, it is better to allow at least 3–4 hours for your visit. This will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the world of art without missing important masterpieces of painting and sculpture.
