About

Majestically perched on Colle del Poggio hill, San Giorgio Castle is one of the most recognizable symbols of La Spezia. Today, the castle has transitioned from a defensive stronghold into a major cultural hub. Its restored halls house the Archaeological Museum (Museo Civico del Castello San Giorgio), featuring unique collections across two floors. Here, you can see massive grey stone walls, authentic crenellated fortifications, and towers preserved from the late Middle Ages.

In addition to its historical treasures, the castle attracts travelers with its incredible atmosphere and panoramic views. From its heights, a breathtaking vista opens up over the port, the endless gulf, and the majestic peaks of the Ligurian Apennines, making it an ideal spot for those seeking inspiration and tranquility among ancient stones.

What to Do

Your visit should begin with a walk around the mighty fortress walls. You can admire the original 14th-century masonry and the characteristic crenellated towers that once protected the city from raids. The open platforms by the walls offer the best panoramic view of La Spezia: from here, you can perfectly see the harbor with its cruise ships and the terracotta roofs of the old quarters.

Inside the fortress, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum. Its collection covers a vast period—from the Copper and Bronze Ages to Roman rule. Of particular interest are the famous anthropomorphic statue-stelae from Lunigiana, as well as exquisite Roman mosaics and marble carvings found during excavations of the ancient city of Luni.

For those who prefer a more contemplative experience, the castle grounds offer many secluded corners. It is a wonderful place to take memorable photos against the backdrop of the Ligurian Mountains or simply sit in silence, enjoying the sea breeze and the sense of living history that permeates every stone of this citadel.

Getting There

The castle is located right in the city center at Via XXVII Marzo, SN. There are two ways to reach it from the lower part of the city: by climbing a scenic but fairly long staircase, or by using the special public lift, which makes the ascent much easier. The lower lift station is located near the Church of the Sacred Heart.

If you arrive in the city by train, you can walk from the La Spezia Centrale station to the fortress in about 15–20 minutes or take a 5-minute taxi ride. Local buses also run towards the hill, stopping within walking distance of the entrance.

For those traveling by private or rental car, keep in mind that the roads on the hill are narrow and parking spaces are limited, so walking or using the lift remains the most convenient option.

History & Facts

The history of this fortification began in 1262, when Niccolò Fieschi decided to build a stronghold on Colle del Poggio hill. At that time, the castle served as a symbol of power for the mighty Fieschi clan, who were engaged in a long-standing struggle with the Doria family of Genoa for regional influence.

The fortress had a turbulent fate: in 1273, it was almost completely destroyed by Genoese forces. However, the strategic importance of the site was so great that in 1371, by decree of the Republic of Genoa, the castle was rebuilt and surrounded by powerful walls. It was then that it began to take on the features we see today.

In the early 17th century, the castle underwent another major modernization—in 1607, a new fort was added to strengthen the city's defenses. For centuries, San Giorgio Castle remained the main landmark of the old town, protecting residents and controlling the gulf. Today, it is recognized as a vital medieval testament to the history of Liguria.

Time Needed

To explore all the corners of the fortress at a leisurely pace, you will typically need 1.5 to 2.5 hours. About 30 minutes should be set aside for a walk along the outer walls to enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the sea horizon from the ramparts.

The majority of your time will be spent visiting the Civic Archaeological Museum located inside. The two floors of exhibits are very dense, and history buffs may need up to two hours to carefully examine all the artifacts—from ancient statue-stelae to Roman mosaics.
