The Bridge of Lies (Romanian: Podul Minciunilor) is one of the most recognizable and mysterious landmarks in the city of Sibiu and all of Transylvania. Located in the heart of the historical center, this elegant pedestrian bridge has become a true symbol of the city and a must-see on every traveler's route through Romania. It doesn't just connect two squares; it symbolically links the Upper Town, where the nobility once lived, with the Lower Town — the district of craftsmen and merchants.
Built in 1859, the Bridge of Lies is the oldest functioning cast-iron bridge in the country. Its ornate metal structure and elegant design, surrounded by ancient architecture, make it one of the most photogenic spots in Sibiu. A walk across the bridge is an opportunity not only to enjoy the views but also to feel the spirit of the old city, which carefully guards its secrets and stories.

The bridge earned its intriguing name due to many legends passed down through generations. The most famous one claims that the bridge has the ability to detect lies: if someone says something untrue while standing on it, the structure will begin to creak and shake menacingly, and a major lie could even cause it to collapse. Other legends link the bridge to unfaithful lovers who made vows here and broke them, or to dishonest merchants who were allegedly thrown off the bridge as punishment for deceiving customers.
However, there is a more prosaic explanation. It is believed that the bridge was originally called "Liegenbrücke" in German (which can be translated as "lying/stationary bridge"), but due to the phonetic similarity to "Lügenbrücke" ("bridge of lies"), the more colorful name stuck with the people. Whatever the case, the Bridge of Lies remains a place shrouded in mystery and romance that is definitely worth a visit.
