The Main Square (Piața Mare), or Grand Square, is the historical and cultural heart of Sibiu, located in Romania. It is the largest and most significant public space in the Old Town, serving as the starting point for exploring its rich heritage. First mentioned in documents at the beginning of the 15th century as a grain market, the square has witnessed major events for centuries—from lively trade and city assemblies to public executions. Today, the historical center of Sibiu, including the square, is a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list and attracts travelers with its unique medieval atmosphere.
The architectural ensemble of the square is impressive in its diversity. It is surrounded by magnificent historical buildings from the 14th to 19th centuries, whose appearance harmoniously combines Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic features. Every building here is a separate page of history. Among the most significant structures are the Brukenthal Palace, which houses one of the country's best art museums, and the old Town Hall. Walking across the square, you will feel the spirit of time and can enjoy views of the brightly colored facades of ancient houses.
One of the most recognizable and intriguing features of the square is the so-called "houses with eyes." these are old buildings with dormer windows on the roofs that resemble watchful eyes. Originally, these windows served to ventilate the attics where supplies were stored. This unique architectural element gives the city a mysterious and somewhat fairytale look. Towering over the square is the Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului), which connects the Main Square with the Small Square and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the entire historical center.
The Main Square is not just a historical monument, but a living and dynamic place. Life is always bustling here: cozy cafes and restaurants are open, and fairs and festivals are held. It is an ideal place for leisurely walks, a starting point for exploring the narrow streets of the Old Town, and getting to know its many attractions.
