How to get to Jeddah

Getting There: Introduction

When planning a trip to Jeddah, you are setting off for the "Bride of the Red Sea" — the main port and economic hub of Saudi Arabia. This dynamic metropolis serves as the gateway for pilgrims and attracts tourists with its historic districts and modern resorts. You can get here in various ways: from a comfortable flight to an exciting journey by car or bus.

By Plane

The primary and fastest way to reach the city is by air via King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED). This is one of the region's key aviation hubs, excellently connected to the city's infrastructure and receiving flights from all over the world.

If a direct flight is not possible, travellers often choose flights to neighbouring cities, such as Taif (134 km) or Al Baha (290 km). Theoretically, there is a route option via Port Sudan, but due to complex logistics across the sea, flying directly into Jeddah remains the most convenient solution.

By Train

Contrary to outdated perceptions, rail transport here is developed to a high standard thanks to the Haramain High Speed Railway. Modern trains connect Jeddah (including a station directly at the airport) with the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, ensuring a fast and comfortable transfer.

For those travelling from regions without railway coverage, for example, from the direction of Taif or Al Baha, the journey will need to be combined with road transport. However, within the key tourist hub of the west coast, the train is an excellent alternative to taxis.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Bus services remain a popular and budget-friendly way to reach the coast from neighbouring regions. Regular trips connect the metropolis with the city of Taif: comfortable coaches cover the distance of approximately 235 km in an average of 3–4 hours, depending on traffic and the number of stops.

A bus journey allows you to enjoy the changing scenery from mountain ranges to the coastal plain. It is recommended to book tickets for intercity routes to Jeddah in advance, especially during the high season, to guarantee seat availability.

By Car

Travelling by car is an excellent choice for those who value freedom of movement. The most popular and scenic route leads from the city of Taif: a distance of about 181 km along a modern highway can be covered in just 2.5 hours. The road from Al Baha will take more time — about 5 hours (392 km), but will also please you with quality road surfaces.

For extreme road trippers, there is a theoretical overland route from Port Sudan, however, it involves a detour of nearly 2000 km and over 35 hours behind the wheel, making it extremely exhausting. When planning a trip by taxi or rental car to Jeddah, always take the hot climate into account and keep a supply of water.

Travel Tips

To ensure your stay in this colourful port city is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have prepared several important recommendations. Considering local traditions and the climate, these tips will help you avoid awkward situations.

  1. Clothing and Dress Code. Dress modestly and with respect for traditions. Women are recommended to wear loose clothing covering shoulders and knees (an abaya is desirable, though not always mandatory for tourists), and men should avoid short shorts in public places.
  2. Transport. The most convenient way to get around is via ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem). Public transport is developing, but for tourists, taxis remain more reliable and faster.
  3. Finances. The national currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere, but having some cash for small shops in the old town (Al-Balad) will be useful.
  4. Prayer Times. Remember that during prayer times (5 times a day), shops and restaurants may close for 20–30 minutes. Plan your day with this schedule in mind.
  5. Climate and Health. It is very hot and humid here for most of the year. Be sure to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and try not to stay in the sun at midday.
  6. Rules of Conduct. Avoid public displays of affection and do not photograph local residents (especially women) without their explicit permission. The consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
  7. Connectivity. English is widely spoken in the service sector, but by learning a couple of words in Arabic ("Shukran" — thank you), you will earn the goodwill of the locals.

By following these simple rules, you will be able to fully enjoy the hospitality of Jeddah and discover its unique atmosphere without any hassle.
