Today, the tower's appearance combines austere history with the modern hospitality of Slovenia. Inside the ancient stone walls, there is now a modern wine shop. Here, tourists can not only touch the ancient masonry but also get acquainted with the region's rich winemaking traditions by tasting the best local varieties in a cozy tasting room.

One of its unique features is its engineering history: the tower was artificially raised above the river level to avoid flooding. This makes it more than just a beautiful building; it is a testament to the skill of past and present builders who managed to preserve historical heritage in changing conditions.

History & Facts

The history of this structure dates back to the 16th century. The tower was built as a key element of Maribor's defensive system during a time when the region lived in constant fear of Turkish invasion. In total, the city was protected by four such towers, but this one is considered the oldest and the best-preserved to this day.

Interestingly, the construction of the tower actually shifted the city's defensive line right up to the Drava River. For centuries, it fulfilled its protective function, but in the 20th century, the architectural monument faced a new threat — this time from nature. After the construction of a dam for the Zlatoličje power plant, the water level in the river rose significantly, which could have led to the destruction of the foundation.

In 1968, a true engineering feat was accomplished: to save the historical heritage, the massive stone tower was lifted in its entirety onto a new foundation. It was set 142 centimeters higher than its original level. This complex operation allowed this unique site to be preserved for tourists and the residents of Slovenia.

Time Needed

To simply view the tower's architecture from the outside and take some striking photos against the Drava River, you will need about 20–30 minutes. It is a great stop during a general stroll through the historical city center.

If you plan to go inside, visit the wine shop, and enjoy a tasting of the best Slovenian wines in an authentic medieval setting, we recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours. This will give you time to leisurely appreciate the bouquet of local drinks and the unique atmosphere of the ancient fortification.
