Columbus House

About

Imagine a piece of Victorian England transported under the warm sun of Andalusia. Columbus House, known locally as Casa Colón, is a magnificent historical complex in the city of Huelva, which once served as Europe's most luxurious hotel. Built at the end of the 19th century, it combines British restraint, Modernist elegance, and colonial scale.

Today, this landmark in Spain has transformed into a dynamic cultural hub and congress palace. Its grounds, covering about 2 hectares, include several pavilions surrounded by lush gardens. The building's architectural style, with its recognizable wrought-iron balconies, Rio Tinto Company emblems, and exquisite ceramics, makes it one of the city's main gems.

The complex is officially included in the Andalusian Historical Heritage Catalogue. It is not just a museum or an exhibition hall, but a living space where the history of early mining investors meets contemporary art and international festivals.

What to Do

Life is always buzzing within the walls of Casa Colón: it regularly hosts art exhibitions, theater performances, and conferences. One of the most significant events you can attend in Huelva is the prestigious Ibero-American Film Festival, for which this complex traditionally serves as the venue.

Be sure to stroll through the inner gardens to see the famous Triton Fountain and enjoy the tranquility in the heart of the city. Architecture enthusiasts should take note of the Salón de Chimeneas (Chimney Room), decorated with green glazed ceramics and unusual reliefs, as well as the spacious Renaissance-style dining hall, which spans nearly 500 square meters.

Inside the building, many historical details have been preserved: massive English doors, marble floors, and exquisite ceilings. It is an ideal place for those who want to take atmospheric photos in 19th-century interiors or simply take a break from the city bustle while contemplating the harmony of ancient architecture and nature.

Getting There

Finding this architectural monument is easy, as it is located in the heart of Huelva, on Plaza del Punto, right across from the City Hall. If you are already walking through the central districts or the port area, it will only take a few minutes on foot.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses stop nearby, connecting different parts of the city. If you are arriving from other regions of Spain, such as Seville, or from Faro in Portugal, Huelva's stations are a 10–15 minute walk from the complex.

For travelers by car, there is a convenient underground parking garage located directly beneath the complex. You can also use taxi services or rent a bike to combine your visit with a tour of other British heritage sites in the area.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1881 thanks to the initiative of the entrepreneur Guillermo Sundheim. He planned to build a hotel that could meet the demands of wealthy investors from the British Rio Tinto Company. The project, brought to life by architects José Pérez Santamaría and Andreas Mora, cost a staggering 6 million reals and opened its doors in the summer of 1883.

At that time, the Hotel Colón was considered one of the most advanced in Europe. It had 200 rooms, and its technical equipment was mind-boggling: it had telephone and electricity even before they were available to most of the city's residents. Every room featured bathtubs with not only fresh water but also heated sea water, turning a stay here into a true resort experience.

The building played a special role in 1892 during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, hosting high-ranking politicians and delegations from Latin America. Later, after a period of use as offices for mining companies, the complex passed into municipal ownership. In 1992, for the 500th anniversary of Columbus's expedition, the site was ceremoniously renovated and inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía as a cultural center.

Time Needed

For a standard introductory visit, during which you can leisurely stroll through the gardens, examine the pavilion facades, and look into accessible exhibition halls, 1 to 2 hours is usually enough.

However, if your visit coincides with a cultural event, such as a film festival or a concert in the auditorium, you should plan for an additional 2–3 hours. This will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the city's modern cultural life and appreciate the acoustics and comfort of the renovated congress palace.

The complex is open to visitors on weekdays and Saturdays; however, it is closed on Sundays. Please note that there is a long break in the middle of the day.
