The park's main feature is the wonderful combination of nature and history. Here, among majestic oaks, firs, and chestnuts, an authentic treasure is hidden—the 12th-century Romanesque Church of San Juan Bautista. It was carefully moved here from a flood zone, giving the park the status of not just a place for walks, but also an important cultural site. Tall trees serve as a refuge for many birds, whose singing accompanies visitors throughout their journey along the well-kept alleys.

While walking through the park, you will encounter elegant flower beds, a sundial, and unique wooden sculptures created by the master Teo Calvo. This place is ideal for those seeking solitude in the heart of the city or wanting to discover the region's rich Romanesque heritage in an unusual, relaxed setting.

What to Do

In this park, everyone will find something to their liking, whether it is an educational excursion or a relaxing rest in the shade of centuries-old trees. The first thing you should do is head to the Church of San Juan Bautista. Inside this ancient temple is an information center where you can gain a deep understanding of the Romanesque architectural style for which the province is so famous. It is a great chance to combine a walk in the fresh air with cultural enrichment.

For art lovers, interesting objects are scattered throughout the park: look for the sculptural groups and unusual figures carved directly from tree trunks by the artist Teo Calvo. A walk turns into a kind of quest to find these unique works. If you are traveling with family, children will surely appreciate the modern playground, while adults can relax at the local terrace bar, enjoying refreshing drinks.

Depending on the season, the park offers different experiences. In summer, you can escape the heat under the thick canopies of chestnut trees or catch an evening live music concert. In winter, during the Christmas period, the park transforms into the "Magic Forest" (Bosque Mágico) with festive lighting, and during local fairs, the alleys often turn into open-air exhibition halls where contemporary artists display their work.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1870, when the area was designed as a municipal greenhouse and nursery. In the early 20th century, the space underwent a significant renovation, transforming into a classic public garden in the Romantic style. Its landscape, with winding paths and natural groups of trees, was largely inspired by the English park traditions of the time.

The park's main historical sensation is the Church of San Juan Bautista. This remarkable 12th-century temple was originally located in the village of Villanueva del Río Pisuerga. In the 1970s, when the area was threatened by flooding due to the construction of a reservoir, the decision was made to save the architectural monument. The temple was carefully dismantled stone by stone and moved to Palencia. If you look closely at the facade, you can still see the numbering marks on the stones that helped builders recreate the building in its original form at the new location.

Today, this architectural monument does more than just decorate the landscape; it serves as an important cultural center. Inside its walls is one of Europe's most significant information points for Romanesque art, highlighting the region's status as the cradle of this medieval style. In addition to the church, the park's historical character is complemented by an old sundial and sculptural compositions added during various periods of its existence.

Time Needed

For a leisurely stroll through the shaded alleys and a look at the exterior of the architectural sites, 1–2 hours is sufficient for most visitors. This is enough time to enjoy the peace, examine the sculptures, and take beautiful photos against the backdrop of the ancient church.

If you plan to visit the Romanesque Art Information Point located inside the Church of San Juan Bautista, we recommend adding another 30–45 minutes to your visit. This will allow you to explore the exhibition in detail and learn more about the region's unique heritage. The park is also perfect for a long break with a book or a family picnic if the weather is favorable for staying outdoors.
