Built in 1916, the casino is a magnificent example of the Belle Époque style with Art Nouveau elements. Its grand staircases and high towers recall the times when Spain welcomed kings and European aristocracy here for their holidays. Today, the venue harmoniously combines the functions of an elite gambling club, a cultural space, and a gastronomic center.

Inside, guests will find not only poker and roulette tables but also exhibition halls where works of contemporary painting and photography are regularly displayed. Thanks to its location right across from the city beaches, the casino has become a favorite spot for those wanting to combine the excitement of gaming with the aesthetic pleasure of Cantabria's seascapes.

What to Do

The main magnet for visitors, of course, is the gaming hall. Here, you can try your luck at classic roulette, test your skills at blackjack, or join a Texas Hold'em tournament. For those who prefer a more modern format, there is a zone with slot machines and electronic roulette. Notably, entry to the casino is open not only to professional players but also to tourists wishing to simply experience the atmosphere of excitement — the minimum bets are quite affordable.

If gaming doesn't appeal to you, Gran Casino del Sardinero always has room for cultural enrichment. The building houses an exhibition hall where works by Spanish photographers, sculptors, and painters are often displayed. Additionally, the casino regularly serves as a venue for gala concerts and festivals, filling the evenings with music and social conversation.

Gourmets should pay attention to the local restaurants and bars. They serve exquisite Cantabrian cuisine: the freshest fish, tender beef steaks, and traditional tapas accompanied by the finest Spanish wines. A special pleasure is spending time on the terrace, enjoying a cocktail and watching the sunset over the Bay of Biscay.

Getting There

Finding the Gran Casino del Sardinero is easy, as it is located in the heart of the prestigious resort district at Plaza de Italia. If you are staying in the center of Santander, it is most convenient to use public transport: bus routes No. 1, 3, 4, and Z-2 will take you directly to the "Plaza Italia" or "Casino Sardinero" stops in just 5–10 minutes.

For those who prefer maximum comfort, a taxi or Uber ride from the main train station or the seaport will take about 10 minutes. If you are already enjoying a walk along the picturesque beaches of Primera de El Sardinero or del Camello, the walk to the casino will take no more than 5–7 minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this majestic building began in 1916. It was built on the site of a previous gambling house that was immensely popular with the Spanish royal family but was unfortunately destroyed by fire at the end of the 19th century. The project for the new building was entrusted to the outstanding architect Eloy Martínez del Valle, who managed to embody the spirit of the luxurious Belle Époque in stone.

In the early 20th century, Gran Casino del Sardinero was more than just a place to play roulette or baccarat. It served as the epicenter of social life: grand balls were held here, theatrical premieres thundered, and operas and musicals were staged. It was a true temple of summer leisure for the aristocracy flocking to Santander from all over Europe.

The peak period was interrupted in 1939 when the casino was closed for several decades. In the post-war era, the building was only partially used — for instance, its theater hall showed arthouse cinema and staged experimental plays. The legend's grand revival took place only on December 1, 1978, after a massive restoration led by Ricardo Lorenzo.

Today, the renovated casino carefully preserves its neoclassical appearance with elegant Art Nouveau elements. It continues the traditions of patronage, sponsoring international festivals and sports competitions, while remaining the primary symbol of the golden age of resort Santander and its inseparable connection with the region's maritime history.

Time Needed

To simply appreciate the architectural beauty of the building from the outside and peek into the lobby, 30–40 minutes will suffice. However, if you plan to feel the exciting atmosphere of the gaming halls or visit one of the current exhibitions, you should allow at least 1.5–2 hours for your visit.

For a full evening at Gran Casino del Sardinero, experienced travelers recommend setting aside 3 to 5 hours. This will be enough time to enjoy the games, have a cocktail at the bar, and dine in one of the exquisite restaurants with views of the Atlantic Ocean. If your visit coincides with a cultural event or a gala dinner, your stay here could last all night.

Working Hours

The doors of Gran Casino del Sardinero are open to visitors daily. The establishment begins its operations in the afternoon and continues to welcome guests until late at night, making it the perfect place to end an evening stroll through the city.

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday — from 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM. On holidays, the schedule may vary slightly, so it is recommended to check the official website in advance.
