Located in northern Spain, the Sports Palace catches the eye with its unusual appearance. Its facade is clad in 400 sheets of stainless steel, which, from different angles, resemble the scales of a giant sea creature. It is because of this feature that locals affectionately call the building "la ballena", which translates to "the whale".

Designed by architects Julián Franco and José Manuel Palao, the complex is a multifunctional space. It hosts not only intense sporting battles but also large-scale concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. The interior can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators at once, making it one of the city's largest venues.

What to Do

A visit to the Sports Palace is an excellent chance to immerse yourself in the excitement of Spanish sports. Here, you can witness thrilling basketball, handball, or futsal matches. The stands are designed to provide an excellent view from any seat, creating a sense of being part of the action on the court.

One of the main highlights of the complex is the Cantabrian Sports Museum, located right in the lobby. Its display cases house personal belongings and awards of legendary athletes: from the clubs of the great golfer Seve Ballesteros to the Olympic medals of modern champions. This place will be interesting even to those who are not sports fans, thanks to the fascinating stories of the paths to success.

In addition to sports competitions, the palace frequently hosts musical concerts and cultural shows. After attending an event, it’s worth taking a stroll through the adjacent Parque Atlántico de las Llamas — this massive green space with ponds and paths is perfect for discussing your impressions of the experience.

Getting There

The Sports Palace is located in the El Sardinero district at C. Alcalde Vega Lamera, s/n. Thanks to its proximity to popular beaches and the stadium, getting here from the city center is quite easy.

The most convenient way for tourists is to use public transport. City buses run regularly from the city center to stops near Las Llamas Park or the Sardinero Stadium; the journey takes about 10–15 minutes. If you prefer walking, the route from the waterfront takes approximately fifteen minutes.

For those arriving from the airport, it is most convenient to book a taxi — the trip will take about 25–30 minutes. Travelers arriving by car can use the spacious parking lots located next to the complex and the adjacent park.

History & Facts

The official opening of the Sports Palace took place on May 31, 2003. Its appearance was an important milestone in the large-scale development of the sports infrastructure of the El Sardinero district, turning vacant land into a modern cultural and sports cluster.

A special place in the building's history is held by the Cantabrian Sports Museum, which opened here in 2014. The exhibition traces the journey of regional athletes since the mid-19th century. Interestingly, Cantabrian sports began with traditional folk games such as bolos (a local version of bowling) and rowing boat competitions known as traineras.

A significant boost to the development of elite sports in these parts was given by King Alfonso XIII, who frequently vacationed in the city in the early 20th century. Thanks to the monarch, polo, sailing, and golf became popular in the region, eventually leading to the emergence of world-class stars like the legendary golfer Seve Ballesteros.

Over the years, the arena has hosted several local sports clubs and has firmly established its status as a versatile venue, capable of transforming from a basketball court into a world-class concert hall in just a few hours.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to the Sports Palace, consider the purpose of your trip. For a quick look at the avant-garde architecture from the outside and a visit to the Cantabrian Sports Museum, 1–2 hours is usually enough.

If you have purchased tickets for a basketball match, a handball game, or a music show, set aside 2 to 4 hours for your visit. This will give you enough time to enjoy the atmosphere of the event and explore the complex's interior without rushing.

Many tourists prefer to combine a visit to the arena with a walk in the nearby Las Llamas Park. In this case, it’s worth dedicating half a day to this area to peacefully enjoy both the modern architecture and nature.

The complex is open to visitors and athletes throughout the work week, providing access to training halls and exhibitions. Please note that the building is closed for regular visits on Sundays unless a special event is scheduled for that day.
