History & Facts

The construction of this colossal ensemble began in 1946 and lasted for a decade. Initially, architect Luis Moya Blanco designed the building as an orphanage for children whose fathers died in accidents in the Asturian mines. However, during the construction process, the concept changed, and the facility became a Labor University, intended to provide technical education to thousands of young people.

The architecture of Laboral embodies the idea of an ideal "city within a city." At the heart of the complex is a huge square surrounded by a church, a theater, and administrative buildings. The Church of Laboral deserves special attention, as it boasts the largest elliptical dome in the world among buildings of its type.

After a period of decline at the end of the 20th century, the complex underwent a major restoration. In 2007, it reopened as the City of Culture, preserving its historical monumentality while filling it with new creative content. Today, this site is recognized as the most important architectural heritage of the region and a symbol of the revival of the industrial past.

Time Needed

The scale of the complex is so impressive that even a brief inspection can take more than an hour. To truly feel the "city within a city" atmosphere, it is recommended to allocate at least 2–3 hours for your visit. This time will be enough to stroll through the central square, appreciate the interior of the accessible halls, and take memorable photos.

If you plan to climb the observation tower, visit temporary exhibitions at the Art Center, or visit the local theater, you should set aside half a day. Laboral is a place where you won't want to rush, as every detail of its architecture deserves careful study.
